3-2-1A Coach of the Year - 2002
JEFF GILES
Minneapolis High School
The 3-1A coaches selected Jeff Giles from Minneapolis High School as their Coach of the Year award recipient. Giles led his squad to a sixth-place finish at state with three individual state champions. His team had a 13-0 dual record and placed third at regionals. The Minneapolis squad also won the conference championship and placed first at the Minneapolis Invitational also.
Giles has been coaching at Minneapolis for 15 years, winning three conference team titles (1991, 1992, and 2002). He has a conference dual record of 57-15 and overall dual record of 150-44-1. He has coached seven state champions and 27 state medal-winners overall.
Giles was a state wrestling placer in high school in Missouri. He went on to be a three-year letter winner at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., and was a three year starter. He graduated from SMSU in 1987.
He also was a World Cup Bench Press champion in 1995 as part of the Natural Athletic Strength Association.
Giles, who teaches K-8 Physical Education and Health, was also named the Kansas Wrestling Officials Association Sportsmanship Coach of the Year award winner in 2002 as well.
