College Wrestler of the Year - 2003
BO MAYNES
University of Oklahoma
The KWCA is proud to honor a former Kansas high school wrestler who went on to be an accomplished NCAA Division I student-athlete at the University of Oklahoma. Bo Maynes, of Salina South High School, is being honored as a College Senior Wrestler of the Year.
While at Salina South, Maynes was a four-year undefeated state champion finishing 130-0. And in doing that, he accomplished something that may never be accomplished again as he was never taken down during that tenure.
As a high school student, Maynes also earned national-level success by winning five All-American awards and winning a Junior National freestyle title in 1996.
Maynes continued his competitive career at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He competed at 125 pounds all four years as a Sooner, combining for an 86-27 overall four-year record. He was 14-11 as a freshman, 21-5 as a sophomore, 18-3 as a junior, and 33-8 as a senior, qualifying for the NCAA national tournament and winning a Big 12 title.
During his senior year he finished 2nd at the Brockport Tournament, 2nd at the Missouri Open, 1st at the Oklahoma Open, went undefeated at the National Duals, and was invited to the All Star Classic winning his match 8-0. He went on to add the Big 12 title and NCAA qualification to his list of impressive honors.
Academically, Maynes was a three-time Honor Roll recipient. Maynes is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has served as a leader and role model for the youth by serving as a coach for the Kansas Southern Plains team every summer.
He was coached in high school by Bob Warkentine and in college by Jack Spates.
Maynes is majoring in Social Studies Education with plans to be a secondary teacher and coach.
