6A Coach of the Year - 2003

Joel Rios of Shawnee Mission South High School is the 2003 6A Head Coach of the Year. Coach Rios helped lead the Raiders to an 11th place finish in the Class 6A state tournament in Wichita and a dual record of 5-4 in 2003.

The Raiders had top three finishes at Spring Hill, Shawnee Mission South Inv., Prairie View, Shawnee Mission North, and Sunflower League.

Before coming to Shawnee Mission South, Rios was an assistant coach at Emporia High School for 4 years and has been at Shawnee Mission South for 17 years.

Rios teaches Physical Science at Shawnee Mission South High School and received his degree from Emporia State University in 1986. Rios was a 2x state runner-up.
