4A Coach of the Year - 2004
JON LIPPELMAN
Scott City High School
Coming into the season unranked, Scott City shocked everybody in the 4A ranks by walking away with the state crown in 2003-04. Despite having no finalists, the Beavers put seven wrestlers in the medal rounds to win the team title and help Coach Jon Lippelman get voted Coach of the Year by his 4A peers.
This year’s Beaver squad went 18-1-1 in duals, won the Mid-States Activities Association League title, and qualified 13 wrestlers for the state tournament in Wichita.
It was the third state title for Coach Lippelman, who has been the head coach at Scott City High School since 1986. He was previously an assistant wrestling coach for five years from 1980-1985. He teaches Technology Education at SCHS.
He has coached 157 4A state qualifiers, 67 state placers, and 12 state champions. He has won three state team titles (1990, 1994, and 2004), two state runner-up trophies (1993 and 2001), a state third-place finish in 1989, and a fourth-place finish in 1992.
His teams have been regional champions in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1994, 2001, and 2004. They were regional runners-up in 1992 and 2000. His teams won league titles in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. His teams placed second in league in 1988, 1993, and 1994.
He has a total dual record of 181-64-3. He has been three times named Kansas Coach of the Year and the sportsmanship Coach of the Year in 1990 by the wrestling officials association. He has been selected to coach the Senior Classic dual in 1990, 1994, and 2004.
Lippelman graduated from Decatur High School in Oberlin in 1975, then attended Pratt Community College to play football. He transferred to Pittsburg State University, graduating in 1979.
He also has coached junior high football for 25 seasons. He credits his wife Marilyn for aiding in his coaching for 23 years.
