Smith Center’s Brock Hutchinson is the 321A Coach of the Year after leading his team to the state runner-up trophy, the school’s first ever state wrestling trophy.
Hutchinson’s team went 6-2 in duals and were second in league duals and third in the league tournament. They were second at Osborne, second at Holdrege, third at Norton, third at Oberlin, fourth at Beloit, first at Grand Island, Neb., first at Hoisington Regional, and had eight state qualifiers and six state placers.
Hutchinson started coaching in 1998 under his father at Smith Center. He became head coach in 2000. His career dual record is 36-16. He has produced 34 state qualifiers, 22 state placers, and one state champion. He was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
He teaches Physical Education, middle school technology, and is At-Risk Coordinator at Smith Center. He graduated from Fort Hays State in 1998.
Hutchinson was a three-time stat qualifier and two-time state placer (5th, 3rd) in high school. He was 36-1 as a senior. He played football at Fort Hays State, named RMAC Player of the Week, National Player of the Week, and an Academic All-American.
