Jason Nichols of the Leavenworth Times has provided media coverage for wrestling in a variety of ways for all of the Leavenworth area schools. For his efforts, he is awarded a Media of the Year award by the KWCA.

Nichols has been a sports editor at the Leavenworth Times for eight years. He previously was an assistant sports editor and an adjunct professor of Journalism at the University of Saint Mary. He recently became a journalism teacher at Leavenworth High School.

Nichols provided match coverage for Pleasant Ridge, Lansing, and Leavenworth High Schools. And thanks to LHS alum Shawn Bunch, he was able to cover NCAA wrestling championships as Bunch was a multiple time NCAA All-American and NCAA finalist. He also covered the area youth wrestling groups and the Kids State Wrestling Tournament in Topeka.

“What really drew me into the sport was that it was so easy to get to know the people involved,” Nichols explained. “Because it is a one-on-one competition, not only did I get to know the athletes in my own area, I was familiar with athletes from across the state. I’ve gotten to know coaches from schools outside my area and have become fans of their programs.”
