Well you are obviously right about not knowing him. Mr. Jackson was the Ark City coach until a couple of years ago.

Even though he didn't coach a specific school and he's now moved on, I think Kevin Klemm did a ton for Kansas High School wrestling. He helped lead the East Kansas Club to high finishes across the country in both freestyle and greco-roman.

I think 321A has 4 active coaches who have won state titles. All four of these guys have been coaching 20-30 years and have always been succesful.
Dale Samuelson
John Flores
Kirk Baker
Larry Gabel

In 4A Doug Moore fits the above description and has been at it just as long with titles and long term success.

Coach Florez won two state titles in Western Kansas Leoti-Wichita County, NOT GardenCity.

Dito to the comment concerning Kevin Klemm... a lot of high school coaches set back and looked good while kids that Kevin brought up and along won state titles. If you look at all the Kansas kids that have been successful at Jr Nationals and at the collegiate levels, Kevin has been involved in a large percentage of them. He will be a bigtime asset to the Stanford program and we will say that room be better for it. Just too bad that Kansas never saw the light and had him run our freestyle and greco system, we definitely missed the boat on that one.

I am very impressed with SM East's new coaches:

This is Coach John Sonderegger's second year with the Lancer program. He brings a wealth of wrestling knowledge to Shawnee Mission East. As a wrestler, Sonderegger was the first Big Eight Conference Champion in 50 years of wrestling at the University of Missouri. He was twice a Collegiate All-American, placing fourth in the NCAA Division I Tournament at 150 pounds. Sonderegger was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the Big Eight Conference during his senior campaign and continues to hold the single season win record at Mizzou.

Assistant Coach -- Colin MacKee:

This is Colin's first year at Shawnee Mission East. Colin MacKee is a former 119 pound Kansas State Champ from Bishop Meige. He wrestled for CMSU in college and coached at Pembroke HS.

Assistant Coach -- Miles Martin:

This is also Coach Martin's first year as a Shawnee Mission East Wrestling Coach. Miles is a former prep school heavyweight champ from Colorado. His recent coaching experience was with the successful Turner program.

With the addition of a new club program feeding into SM East, I expect the SM East program to improve every year from here on out.

i'd have to say my coach wyatt frohling deserves a little bit of respect. He left a very successful Trego Community Program (WaKeeney) and came to Russell. I know while he was at wakeeney he received coach of the year honors at least one time and had a list of other credentials...(can't think of everything) and has come to russell and started to get the program going again, he's been an avid promoter of the sport in russell and has even got more kids interested in the kids club.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but the title of the fourm was who is the best coaches? Not who is doing a good job right now? Or who is turning a program around right now?

How DARE you compliment other people! How DARE you.

Now let's all get back to talking about how totally sweet Abilene is.

I would like to throw my vote in for the Wichita South head coach, and the Manhattan head assistant, Mr. Tony Andrade. The WS coach yells like no other and has a sweet moustache, and Coach Andrade is a tricep-pinching machine. It really has to be experienced to fully understand the magnitude of his powers.

Coach Gonzales and Sawner from SHHS. They are the best coaches around. We may not have the best team in the state, but we sure are in the best shape of our lives. Thanks to an excellent coaching staff.

You know it's getting near freezing point when I agree with Nigel Isom and Mr. Salyer on 5 coaches:

I agree with Bill Christener of Abilene now on the retired list...

and without a shadow of a doubt absolutely have all the best things to say about good old Bob Warkentine of Salina South....

the other 3 I agree with that popped up were on Salyer's list of Current coaches:

Terry Alley: ok...he has 2 guys that have made the National Finals in college (University of Central Oklahoma) a combined 3 times out of 4 times (Silvis = 2 out of 3) (Saferite = 1 out of 1) Silvis should make the finals again this year...Saferite has a chance to bust into the lineup and make a name for himself again.

Dennis Charbonneau - great coaching has always been the reason that Clay Center challenges for the NCKL and State title year in and out...usually top 2 in league, and top 8 at state...good support staff and strong family ties with son having wrestled for him...good tie in with collegiate program (Nebraska-Kearney)

Doug Moore - The Concordia Don Jaun....he always reminded me of a mafioso big boss...and if you go into the Panther's Palace be prepaired...a team that's ultra tough to beat in duals, in fact beat 5A Salina South this weekend going 3-0 in South's Quad....Just recording 200th coaching career win this week...remember him and Ellsworth's Farmer Freeman getting in a yelling match at my 1st regional as a freshman in 1995.

Swayz,
Go back in the UCO records and you'll find a few other wrestlers that Alley has sent there. Wouldn't expect you to remember, it was before your time.

Most of the guys he sent were probably when I was still in Germany living overseas...but didn't he send Brian Melchiroi (spelling is bad on that one) and the Drake brother's as well?

what about coach tim dryden at kapaun mount carmel...they may not be doing so hot now, but you wait until it counts and he will have those boys ready...not to mention they only took five state qualifiers last year and took fifth and all of them placed:2 champions, 1 second, 1 fifth, and 1 sixth...not too bad

Bruce Campbell should be mentioned along with Dale Samuelson as one of the top coaches. They continue to produce champions year after year. They continue to make Oakley a power at state every year. I appreciate what they have did for Oakley and Kansas wrestling, but most of all I appreciate what they did for me.

Also, Coach Baker and Flores are great coaches and know how to win.

I'm going to throw Lee Woodfords name in this topic because I feel he is better than alot of the coaches mentioned.

Clearly coach woodford has done a great job over a long period of time. He has yet to win the title but imagine how well he has done with all those dyslexic animals.(just kidding)

Jon Lippleman has done quite a good job out at Scott over the years, at least one team title and some really great individuals, and seldom if ever an in-your-face kind of guy.
