PCC Upsets Colby in Wrestling Win
11/17/06
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pratt Community College Wrestling team hosted its first duel since 1973 last night in fine fashion, defeating Colby Community College 21-15 at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.

“It was great to get our first victory at home. Colby is a quality program and for us as a first year program to come out and win in front of our home fans, it was great,” Head Coach Chas Thompson said.

It was an inauspicious start as Pratt had to forfeit their first match. But then the Beavers reeled off four wins in a row. James Fox started the streak, winning a 7-2 decision over Tyler Baker. Colby Crawford, then pinned returning All American Levi Younkin in the third period.

“I was very impressed with Colby’s performance. He’s had about a four year layoff from wrestling and he went out there and beat one of the best wrestlers in the country,” Thompson said of Crawford’s effort.

Rylan England followed with 10-0 win over Cale Farber. Then, David Loos pulled off a huge win for the Beavers. Filling in for the ill Jason Nichols, Loos beat Cole Garcia, one of Colby’s best wrestlers, 12-4.

“That was David’s first college duel and he stepped up to the plate like a true champ,” Thompson added.

After Colby fired back winning the next three matches, Jeren Scheer, who bumped up to the 197 pound weight class in place of the injured Justin Naccarato, beat Naoto Saga 15-3 to seal the deal for the Beavers.

To put the icing on the cake, Carl Wilkinson closed out the night beating Gabe Walz in a 3-0 decision.

“I am pumped about tonight’s win. I knew that this had the makings to be a tight duel. I’m really proud of the guys. They wrestled their butts off tonight for the crowd,” Thompson concluded.

The Beavers’ next action will be at the Northern Colorado Open on Sunday, November 19.

That is a very high quality win for Pratt. Colby has been one of the top junior college programs in the country for a lot of years. Pratt has now beaten 2 of the 3 other jucos in the state...a lotta firepower for a first year program…working off of one years recruiting clas...not to mention that a couple very good starters (Nichols and Naccarato) were out of the lineup.
