Thought it would be time for a bump on this topic. I know that many parents and wrestlers are just now considering camps. For many the financial planning has to start now. There are several good camps with affordable prices offered in our state but thought that it was time to start promoting them. This could also include day clinics offered by various clubs, I know that one of these with J.J. McGrew was one of the best experiences we had and the cost for a full week at the time was a very affordable $40. There always seems to be camps and clinics like this that occur that we find out about after the fact.

My son has enjoyed the USAW-KS Camp at Manhattan each year he has attended and last year he also enjoyed the Winfield All American Camp and the Kids Cadet camp at Neosha. Any good recommendations or individuals wanting to promote your camp go ahead, sell me and others why I/we should attend yours when making a determination of where we spend our money. There appears to be several other good ones to consider. The Brandon Slay Greater Gold Camps, Purler’s Tactical Scoring Camp, or The Quest for Gold Clinics seem definitely affordable, The Tiger Wrestling Technique Camp, and I have been especially interested in the Wrestle the World Outdoor Team Camp put on by Terry Brand. I have heard that Joe Seay is doing one in Tulsa as well as other camps normally done by OSU and OU. Hope to hear back on these.

By the way I have spoken with Joe Seay in the past and know that he would be willing to come up for a day clinic, but don’t know if there would be interest in something like that. Let me know if there is.

By the way some links to additional camps south of our border follows: http://www.okwrestle.com/pages/camppage.htm

As for Freestyle/Greco Camp. The best camp is the Southern Plains Camp. It is the only camp I know in Kansas that has three of the five Kansas college wrestling coaches. If you want to learn how to wrestle Freestyle or Greco this is the camp for you. See http://www.usawks.com/invites/SoPlainsCampInfo.htm

For more camp information, go to http://www.usawks.com/camps.htm .

I would also like to echo Bob Phillips' comments regarding the Southern Plains Camp. For the caliber of coaching, it's a real bargain. Also, Eric Akin is tentatively planning on spending a few days at the camp this year, helping out with the kids!

The Southern Plains camp is without a doubt one of the best freestyle/greco camps in the area. first for the coaches, and second for the quality of workout partners. It is set up as a training camp and the kids besides a ton of great instruction, get all they can handle in face-to-face workouts with the best of the best. There were about 6 kids in my son's work out group last year that rotated in and out. 4 state champs, a runner-up and a 6th placer. Talk about a great week of competition. He improved his wrestling more in that week than any other time of the year. Regardless of Freestyle/Greco/Folkstyle, he became a much better wrestler.

Do whatever you can to get your kids there.
