I'm trying to understand how kids wrestling in these early tournaments in OK get ready? Do they not play football in the fall? Or do their teams end early? Our team still has two weeks to go and then my son will need at least a few weeks to get into wrestling mode.
Just wondering what other kids do in this case.

I know what you mean. My son will be playing football through the 3rd week in November. I have not decided if I will let him practice both yet or not. I have always said it is too much, but now I am not sure if he will be ready in time starting that late. Is it ok to let them practice both?

I would not let my son practice both. Actually, I don't see how he could. Football practice is normally Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while wrestling practices are normally Monday through Thursday. There has to be some time for school work and such.
Our last football game is Nov. 1st, so wrestling on Nov. 8th or 15th without a few weeks of practice would seem too much to me.

That is definitely a problem and fast becoming a bigger one! Wrestling is not alone, in that we start earlier and earlier. Ten years ago tournaments before Christmas were very rare, as was pre-Thanksgiving practice. A 4-month season has become 5-months and is fast approaching 6.

I suggest you talk to your club and let them know your problem.

Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

Let him finish Football, there is no rule saying you have to wrestle every practice and every tournament.
State is not until March, I think he can get ready by then!

A thing they do down here in some of the high schools I observed is have the 1st period of the day M-F serve as practice for varsity athletics, then usually there would be a "study hall" for second period in which they could study the moves more vigorously.

I'm sorry to say this...but I think ur guys are being big babies on this. I'm not trying to start a fight w/ anyone here or anything...this is just strictly my opinion. When I was in 5th though 8th grade I did football and wrestling at the same time. It never bothered me a bit. The way I always looked at it, was the more practice I had the better in shape I would be for each sport. When it came time for Oklahoma season, I would just work out whenever and where ever I could. And it's like the Rose Hill coach said, "there is no rule saying that you have to wrestle every tournament and go to every practice" but it does help those individuals that want to get that extra work out and be better than thier opponents if they do go to every work out and every tournament. And I do know and realize that it gets very expensive, I've been wrestling for 10 yrs. now and in my 11th. I know what it takes out of a kid to want to do this sport. But if you want see your kid excel in this sport, ur gonna have to support him/her in whatever decision they make. Wether it be practice on thier own for the Oklahoma season, or if they want to take a week or two off. But like I said, that's just my opinion...and I hope I didn't offend anyone w/ it. If so I appologize(sp).

I do agree that you should support your child in what ever they want to do, but when I have a 11 year old who is going to school 5 days, football practice Tuesday, Thursday, wrestling practice Monday, Wednesday, basketball after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and then this time of year, football games Saturday and Sunday, usually 3 in a weekend, I think as parents we should make a decision of where to draw the line. Is another wrestler going to have that much of an edge by getting in 2 more weeks of practice? Maybe in the first couple of weeks, but is it worth all the pressure the child will be under during those 2 weeks?
I am just torn on this subject because I see both sides. Even though I love it, I am just glad football season is over!!!!

Yes it has become somewhat of a problem. Many leagues switched to the ealier wrestling season just a few years ago.

Rose Hill is trying something new this year. The season is just too long, so our first tournament is January 24, 2004.
We didn't start practice until December. :p
