Each year before State, a couple radio guys go head to head with a couple of newspaper guys in 3-2-1A pick 'ems. What do guys from the Hays Daily News know over informed radio guys? We'll soon find out. Ok...let the debating begin.
103#: Carlos Gallaway, Stockton...believe he'll bounce back from a disappointing Regional
112#: Colt Rogers, Smith Center...taking him to beat Hase again. Rogers is younger but stronger and better on his feet
119#: Brendan Harshman, Chase County...experience and a #1 ranking all year. This was a tough one because I also like Patton from Wellsville
125#: Matt Migchelbrink, Atwood...please. You really going to pick anyone else?
130#: Nathan Broeckelman, Norton...like him in a shootout with Bechtel from Eureka for the second straight year
135#: Brett Swoyer, Rock Creek...a tough choice in a good weight. State runner-up last year
140#: Brad Esterl, Beloit...defending champ who dominated #2 York from Smith Center last week
145#: Jason Pyle, Sabetha...see 125# explanation
152#: Jordan Gienger, St. Francis...could be Sainty's first State Champ since 1999 - Kelly Gabel and Gabe Jenkins
160#: Ryan Patterson, Garden Plain...unbeaten and state savy. Younkin from Oakley in the semis is a potential stumbling block
171#: Derek Oswald, Atchison County...wins the weakest weight in 3-2-1A
189#: Michael Malay, Trego...Ok Malay - I picked you. Now your brother and Dad can get off my back. Should make it two in a row
215#: Aaron Racette, Oakley...finals matchup with Palmer from Smith Center will be a battle of two horses
285#: Duane Zlatnik, Rossville...Alex Thomas from Norton will finish the season with one loss - to Zlatnik in the semis.
**Team** 1. Norton...lossed one of the best senior classes in their history last year and still too deep and talented for anyone to beat
2. Smith Center...I believe all of their wrestlers will score points with a possible 3 collecting big semifinal points
3. Scott City...years of wrestling in 4A prepare the young Beavers for a Top 3 finish
I think Beloit, Phillipsburg and Silver Lake round out the Top 6, in no particular order. I really liked what Beloit did at Regionals last week. They only have one senior!

Here goes...I'll list the champion first:
103 - Pfannenstiel-Norton over Antillon-Scott City
112 - Hase Silver Lake over Frye-Eureka (toughest bracket!)
119 - Brobst-Eureka over Merriman-Onaga
125 - Migchelbrink-Atwood over Bainter-Norton
130 - Broeckelman-Norton over Bechtel-Eureka
135 - Swoyer-Rock Creek over Mosley-WichInd (watch for upset)
140 - Esterl-Beloit over Thibault-Halstead
145 - Pyle-Sabetha over Kough-Scott City (Pyle gets OW)
152 - Gienger-St Francis over VanEaton-Norton
160 - Patterson-Garden Plain over Corwin-SLake
171 - Oswald-ACCHS over Meinert-PRidge
189 - Malay-Trego over Vander Linden-Burlington
215 - Racette-Oakley over Palmer-Smith Ctr
285 - Zlatnik-Rossville over Snyder-Hoisington (Zlatnik's got tough semi with Thomas-Norton)

I choose Bechtel and Mosely to win their weights. Swoyer will have a tough one in his second match with it being against his only loss this year. So I see him or Benz in the finals with Mosely.

Alright, since you asked, here it goes.
103#:I think this weight class is wide open but im going to take Pfannenstiel-Norton, i would take Gallaway but he looked bad last week and during the last couple weeks of the season
112#: Colt Rogers, Smith Center, has a very tough Semi's match but i think he will win it on his feat, Although Campbell-Oakley has been wrestling Lights out since the Hays toruney.
119#:Brad Augustine-Beloit Will be the first of Beloits Champions in an upset.
125#: Matt Migchelbrink, Atwood, Looked very dominant last week, Saw he signed with Nebraska last week.
130#: Nathan Broeckelman, Norton, Very good wrestler although Betchel has had a great year too, should be the best match of the finals.
135#: Brett Swoyer, Rock Creek...a kid who has queitly put together a very great carrer and will finish it off with a Gold Medal.
140#: Brad Esterl, Beloit...Will Make it 2 in a row for him and be Beloits Second champion of the night.
145#: Jason Pyle, Sabetha. Great senior who has had a great carrer and will finish it off with style on Saturday night.
152#: Jordan Gienger, St. Francis. Hate to keep riding the NWK Train but i think he will walk away with the title and Make it 3 Generations of state champs in his family.
160#: Jason Corwin-Silver Lake, over Patterson in the Upset of the night, no disrespect to Patterson ive just heard Corwin is a man child.
171#: Derek Oswald, Atchison County, i think he will win it but i think it is going to be very close between him Matt Hyman of Beloit, I'm putting this one on upset Alert.
189#: Michael Malay, Trego, Blood is thicker than anything with me, so this is a pretty obvious choice, althought their are going to be some good matches in this weight. Im looking forward to the old NWKL match up between McGinty of SES(formerly of Hoxie) and Urban of oberlin in the quaters.
215#: Aaron Racette, Oakley... I think he could go through the whole tournament with out much of a match, Palmer might be able to keep it within 6 or 7, and thats no slam on Palmer, Racette is just the real deal.
285#: Duane Zlatnik, Rossville...Will be a good Semi's match with Zlatnik winning it on his feet, and will be a finals rematch with Wilger in the finals hopefully keeping it as close as Thomas does.
Im taking Norton to Win the team championship again but i think Beloit is going to make it very intersting and it might even be undecided going into the finals. Then again you have to remember what i said about blood being thicker than water with me and know that My older brother is a coach at Beloit, so if it is another Norton blow out it would not completly suprise me, they always seem to wrestle their best at state. Im going to take Smith Center taking 3rd with Silver Lake and P-burg closely behind him.
Thats the way i see it, im sure on monday you all will be reminding me how wrong i am.

When Listing my teams i forgot to List Oakley and St. Francis who i think could also be nipping on Smith Center's heals for a Trophy.

How about a state alumni match between Jason Malay of Trego and Jeff Boyle of Norton? I also think Beloit assistant coach Ryan Malay will win "beard of the year."

Ya, that would be great, take an extremly average HWT and put him against the best heavyweight that kansas has ever had, i would give my self 22 seconds, exactly how long it took Boyle to pin his kid in the finals his Sr. year. Not that i was ever as good as the kid he beat in the finals but its a nice round number, and i think i could run out of bounds maybe twice before he caught me, picked me up like a baby and returned me to the mat like a baby, although i would would have to run straight backwards when the wistle blew. And if Ryan doesn't get "beard of the year" then i would love to know who does cause that thing is getting crazy big, if he could only grow a mustache with it.

He has always had that trashy mustache with the gap between it and the beard. Jason I'd give you 19 seconds against Boyle. Not sayin much cause i would only last 14 seconds.

Jason I remember your style in high school, who could forget a style like that. That is why I'm going out on a limb, I would give you at least 30 seconds with Boyle.
Michael good luck, I will not be making the trip this year since I have no more brothers wrestling, well I mean brothers wrestling that like wrestling. But to each their own. I do not love my baby brother any less. Take care.

IDK i think that Gienger might get upset in the 152 semis, he will prolly wrestle Livesay from lincoln, Gienger beat Livesay at the phillipsburg torny by only 1 it was 6-5, so idk if they meet in the semis its gonna be a good match and best of luck to all the wrestlers

What is the toughest weight this year??? I know 119lbs is tough but 130# from what I hear is stacked. Also I am going to be pulling for Harshman from CC over Patton in the finals.

I think 112, 125 and 135, in no particular order are tough. 130 is decent with Bechtel, Broekelman and Trevor Rempe of Smith Center looked tough last week.

No way anyone beats Thomas. Hate to break it to you, but Thomas will get beat in the semifinals. I've seen this match before in folkstyle and it was not all that close. Zlatnik will beat him and lets all just hope nobody gets a bite taken out of them!
