Wrestling set for NCAA West Regional in Cedar Falls, Iowa, this Saturday. Competition begins at 10 a.m., with the finals session starting at 5 p.m. Northern Iowa will serve as the host for the 2007 NCAA West Regional in the McLeod Center.

Western Regional teams consist of: Air Force, Eastern Illinois, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Wyoming.

SCOUTING THE REGIONAL: (Kansas Kids in Blue)



Air Force, 3-1 in WWC, closed out its regular season with a 25-20 victory over Northern Colorado to move to 6-10 overall. The Falcons will wrestle Zach Valzez (125), Stephen Makuka (133), Jacob Kriegbaum (141), Bridger Lord (149), Zach Lord (157), anthony Dorward (165), Stephen Crozier (174), Jacob Devlin (184), Jordan Tribble (197) and Anthony Stegeman (HWT) in Cedar Falls.

Junior Jacob Kriegbaum (Albeline, KS)



Eastern Illinois, 2-13 overall, will send A.J. Ciccarelli (125), Lenny Grodoski (133), Tommy Reamer (149), Kile O’Toole (157), Billy Gallo (165), Kenny Robertson (174),Greg Perz (184) and Joe Trinka (HWT) to the mats in Iowa. Both Robertson and Perz look to make a return trip to the championship field as each advanced to the NCAAs last season. Robertson has qualified for the NCAA’s three straight years.


North Dakota State closed out the regular season with a 19-19 tie to South Dakota State.The Bison, 8-5-1 and 3-2-1 in WWC, will wrestle Eric Hoffman (125),Eric Sanders (133), Gabe Mooney (141), Ryan Adams (149), Adam Aho (157), Mike Quamme (165), Matt Hermann (174), Matt Wetterling (184), Jacob Bryce (197) and
Justin LaGosh (HWT) on Saturday.



Northern Colorado, 1-4 against regional opponents, ended the regular season falling to Wyoming, 19-16.The Bears will wrestle Tony Mustari (125), Blayze Bahe (133), nationally ranked Kenny Hashimoto (141), Richard Lohr (149), Luke Salazar(157), Devan Lewis (165), Chase Lewis (174), Shawn Vincent (184), Calen Nicholl (197) and Reece Hopkin (HWT) in regional action.

Wyoming, 4-1 in WWC action, ended the 2006-07 season with a 19-16 victory over Northern Colorado.



SDSU, 8-8-1 on the dual season, went 0-1-1 its last time out on the mat, falling to Northern Iowa and tying North Dakota State. SDSU opened the weekend losing to the Panthers, 41-6. Against NDSU, the Jacks won six of the 10 matches, but battled to a 19-19 tie against North Dakota State to close out their regular season. The Jackrabbits finished the year 1-4-1 in Western Wrestling Conference competition and will look to become the first SDSU athletic team to qualify individuals for Division I Championships since the transition began in 2004.

Jacks scheduled to compete are: Marcus Waters (125), Jeff Cooley (133), Derek Pirner (141), Brad Gregory (149), Andy Everson (157), Ryan Meyer (165), Nate Althoff (174), Tyler Sorenson (184), Travis Gottschalk (197) and Jason Stripling (HWT). Sean Flynn (149) will make the trip to Iowa but will not see action. Flynn received minor injuries after rolling his truck on HY 29 heading back to SDSU after watching his brother at the Kansas HS State tournment. Rolled his truck three times...was wearing his seatbelt...walked away to wrestle another day. Wear seatbelts!

The Pokes will wrestle Nick Ramirez (125), Cory VomBaur (133), Garrett Desmond (141), Carter Downing (149), Dane Fuhrman (157), Kyle Morrow (165), Bryan Bernal (174), Dan Barrone (184), Sam endland (197) and Jason Still (HWT) in Cedar Falls.

Northern Iowa will serve as the host for the 2007 NCAA West Regional in the McLeod Center. Fans wishing to attend the NCAA West Regional, should contact the UNI Ticket Office at 319-273-DOME.

Both general admission and reserved tickets are available. General admission tickets will cost $5 for adults and $2 for youth. Reserved seating will consist of the first 10 rows on each side of the mat at the McLeod Center. Reserved seating cost $6 for adults and $3 for youth.
WEST REGIONAL RESULTS: Fans not able to attend the Western Regional can follow the tournament live at unipanthers.com. Brackets and and bout-by-bout results will be updated after each round by host school Northern Iowa.

Not sure, but the way my son was explaining it to me, 1st place qualifies for the national tournment, but there are a couple of wild cards for 2d place winners.
