The Jr. Viking Wrestling Club of Topeka Seaman High School, Thunderbird Wrestling Club of Tecumseh Shawnee Heights High School, and Jackson County Wrestling Club of Holton High School will be hosting the East Kansas Senior Classic on the evening of Friday-March 21, 2008. This event will take place at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, KS. It will be ran in a Team Dual format.

At present, we have only two established requirements; participants must be members in good standing of the 2008 graduating class and they must reside in the boundaries District One of USAWA-KS. We would like to reward those wrestlers that fit this bill and are most deserving; while providing some great match ups for the viewing public.

We will be sending out invitations to the qualifying wrestlers the first week in February. All KWCA ranked wrestlers as of February 1, 2008 who meet the requirements called out above will be recognized with a letter of recognition. They will be asked to respond with their interest to compete in this event. We do not want any qualified wrestlers to be left out of the selection process and in the spirit of that goal we are asking for your help. If you would like to nominate a wrestler for this event you can post their name and credentials here or you can email me at east_ks_classic@yahoo.com . All “At-Large” nominations will also receive a letter of recognition for their accomplishments and will be invited to take part in the selection process. The two teams for the event will be selected the week following the Kansas High School State Tournaments; those selected to participate will be notified and their names will be posted.

Good luck with the remainder of your High School season.

Will there still be the Big Schools vs. Small Schools Dual around this same time? I think it was held last year at the ExpoCentre on this same Friday night.

I think that is the weekend of Kids State, the following week.

The Big School vs. Small School event will not be held the same weekend as The USAWA Kansas Kids State Championship Tournament due to a conflict with the NHSCA Senior Nationals which will be held in Virginia Beach on March 28-30, 2008.

The East Kansas Senior Classic may conflict with the KWCA Big School vs. Small School event. James Stout (Abilene High School Head Wrestling Coach) is handling the arrangements for the KWCA Big School vs. Small School event.

I would like to see them move the Kansas Senior Classic around the state anyway. I know it is handy having it in Topeka, but I would like to see it more centrally located once in awhile.

LancerLou,

The event you are thinking about is the Senior Classic formally the East/West Classic hosted by the KWCA. It is a great event that is open to kids from the entire state of Kansas. KWCA will still host that event, however it will not be on the weekend of Kids State this year; it is my understanding that this year that weekend conflicts with Senior Nationals. The East Kansas Senior Classic is established to showcase kids from within the boundaries of District One only. It is set to be wrestled the Friday evening prior to our District One Tournament which will also be held at the Kansas Expocentre on Saturday-March 22nd.

For the East Kansas Senior Classic, two coaching teams will be named; the week following Kansas High School State tournaments, these two groups will select their teams from the pool of “qualified and interested” applicants in an alternating fashion until both teams are filled. I hope that by doing it this way we create two very competitive teams with well deserving young men.

I was typing this reply as Richard was typing his;it is my understanding that KWCA avoided March 21st as a date for their event so that they would not conflict with the USAWA-KS Championship Qualifying tournaments. ....I hope my source was correct.

Mark

Hi folks... I wanted to give a brief update here. Leters of regognition for each honoree have been mailed to their respective high school coach. Goto Breaking News on the home page to see a list of those athletes recognized as part of the USAWA East KS All-Senior Team.

Along with the letter of recognition, you will find a survey sheet. You must complete this survey and return it to me if you are interested in competing in the USAW East KS Senior Classic. If you have any questions please leave a message at 785/286-0899 or email me at east_ks_classic@yahoo.com. Thank you for your cooportation and good luck with the remainder of you high school seasons.

lilwrestler09,

Wrestlers will be given their +2 allowed after certification and another +3. Therefor, if chosen to wrestle in the USAWA East KS Senior Classic they will need to make their scratch weight wrestled in HS with a 5# allowance. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks

Mark

We are getting quite a few bio/survey sheets coming our way. If you haven't turned yours in, keep them coming. You can also fax them to my attention at 785/232-1877. The two teams sellected will be cornered by the legendary Eric Akin, Tom Peterman, Travis Phippen and Dusty Spaulding. You don't want to miss out. Call me if you have questions 785-224-5161.

They changed the event to the East Kansas Senior Classic. It's the Eastern half of the state instead of just District 1.

The Ark City and Eureka kids were actually included by mistake. They are all very fine wrestlers but do not fall within the boundaries of District 1 where this event was meant to draw from. I appologize. Thanks for the catch Brian.

Three days left for the other eligible wrestlers to get their surveys/bios turned in.

Thanks for clearing that up Mark. I thought the name was changed to include East Kansas kids. My mistake.

The USAWA East KS Senior Classic matchups have been released! Please check out the “Breaking News” item on the Home Page for the line up. These are all accomplished wrestlers. The event will take place at the Kansas Expocentre at 7pm on March 21st. The two teams will be cornered by Eric Akin and Travis Phippen. They will be assisted by Dusty Spaulding and Tom Peterman.

A couple of our feature match ups include Isenberg vs Naylor, Arb vs Flynn, Randall vs Witt, and Zlatnick vs Langford. I hope you all plan to come out after District One weigh-ins to give all these young men a good send off. They deserve it. More information will be released in the coming week about this event.
