this was the first tournament I've been to that had both open and novice brackets... while I thought this would be good use of my time, being as one son is in open, the other in novice- I'm doubting we will go back next year.

isn't the point of NOVICE competition to learn how things are done?! my son's opponents were given a couple penalty points, and he just didn't understand what was going on. no warnings, just points given off the bat! the reff on matt 4 had a hard time keeping score- he would hold the WRONG hand up, and not correct himself making it hell for the table workers to understang what was going on! I keep a notebook with all my childrens matches in it- I have bout sheets for them, and keep track of score as well. I've known this to be usefull if questions of scoring ever come up, and this day was no exception. both the oposing teams coach and our coach said "yes, what SHE has should be right" and the reff threw his hands in the air shrugged his shoulders and said "I don't know, we'll just go from what the table has on the flipcards" his scoring didn't get better as the day went on either... I noticed at least 8 more matches where the coaches had to stop things to go over score with him.

on a good note, I did like seeing brackets posted when I walked in the door at 6am! it was nice to be able to get that info before a rush of 400 parents and coaches ten min before start of wrestling. no, it didn't start as scheduled, but things moved smoothly after it did start.

I agree mat 4 had many problems and ran behind all day. I was also very disappointed to see all the 16 man brackets for the novice kids. To me novice is a time to get the kids as many matches as possible, not to see how many kids we can collect money from and how much money the club can make. I know hosting a tournament is a great undertaking and requires many hours of hard work but we still need to keep the kids in mind and do what is best for them, not just to make as much money as possible.

Anybody know the results for 10 79? Are all the results going to be posted anytime soon???

I know we will not be coming back to this tournament! we brought 8 wrestlers and i still dont understand this novice open for the 6 and under arnt they all novice at this age? We had one wrestler that was 6 and under 37 was stuck in the open with one other kid who was 40 lbs then on the novice side at same age and weight they had 12 kids in a 16 man bracket both the parents wanted the kids to be switched over so they could get more wrestling in but the tournament wouldnt let them didnt want to work with them at all so that wrestler and i might add his whole family watched one match thet drove 2 hours to watch one match thats a bunch of nonsense!!! Then my youngest son who is at 6 and under 37 was called in wrong by my tea this kinda stuff happens so he was called in at 8 and under 37 i get there and find out they had stuck him in the 8 and under 43 lbs and they acted like they was not gonna change it around it was are fault that it was called in wrong and we had to deal with it and there excuse was it would delay the tournament if they had to change that over but they did change it over and did the right thing but the attitude are team got from the people running the tournament was rude! So i hope you all think twice before you go to this tournament next year make sure everything is called in right and know you might be in for a very long day to watch your kid wrestle one time because they didnt have enough time to make a quick little change.

I would disagree that they are all novice at 6U. My son is in his 3rd year at 6U and shouldn't be wrestling novice kids.

Officiating problems on our end as well, maybe they didn't have enough staffed so they could all rotate and get a break. Hard day for the kids.

Well I will take the blame - specially the 6 & under 37 issue that Jointboys discussed. We also had 60 to 80 changes unrelated to our data entry of the kids information. 60 to 80 changes means changing the headtable bracket, the scorers table bracket, the bout sheets, the wall bracket, what that really means that there is 240 to 320 (possibly 480 to 640 if they all move to another age and weight)things that have to be corrected before the tournament can start - IT IS not just as simple as changing one name and one number. I have been going to kids tournaments for around 20 -25 years. You know what - the people who complain at these tournaments I rarely see them in a volunteer position.
Moving a 12 & under 76 (wrong signup by someone) out of a bracket to and 8 & under 76 bracket so those kids can at least wrestle a kid or kids their own age requires the changing of eight brackets - 2 head table brackets, 2 scorers table brackets, 2 wall brackets, and 2 sets of bout cards. - That is moving just 1 kid. It is very important for parents and club sign up people to get the kids in the correct spot. DO NOT COMPLAIN IF YOU HAVE EVER EVER SIGNED YOUR KID UP WRONG.
With around 400 - 1000 kids at a tournament - you do the math on the possible corrections that might be needed. We had an estimated 984 volunteer hours to put on this tournament. That translates into one person working a forty hour week for 24 and a half weeks. We had 23 kids sign up for the open 6 & under. We have talked about doing 1 - 6 and under group and 1 group of 14 & under. The 6 & under really makes sense to me. The 14 & under I have more questions about that. But most of those kids will be entering high school and need to find out what the competition will be like their freshman year in high school. Anyway - I apologize if it did not work out perfectly for every kid and their parents. If the world had an even distribution of age and weight of kids it would make bracketing a little easier. As far as round robin only matches - you can run into the same problem -if we would have set them up as 4 man or 5 man. I think 6 & under 43 had 32 kids. That is 8 - 4 man brackets. What if in 3 of those brackets only 2 guys each showed up in each of those brackets. You Are All Correct make 2-3 man round robins. Very good but it does take time to make those changes. If it is done all electronically and we would use TRACKWRESTLING software. It renumbers the entire age on that mat so we would have to take down ALL the wall brackets in the hall and repost them ALL as well as ALL new scorers table brackets, ALL head table, ALL bout sheets, etc. So do you want us to post the brackets for the whole tournament only 5 minutes before the start. Oh by they way that is approximately 220 brackets that everybody in the gym will have to run to the hall to see the NEW NUMBERS of their kids matches. That might not meet fire code with 2 gyms in the hall. If one club who sent in 8 entries and had one wrong entry that is 12.5% of the entries sent in wrong. 12.5% of 1000 entries is 125 total wrong entries. If all of these kids are in one of the different 220 brackets then over half of the brackets would have to be changed on the wall, at each table packet, the head table, and the bout sheets. Anyway - we did our best and thanks to all the volunteers to make it possible for these kids to have a little fun, see some buddies and have a little competition on the weekend.

I thought the tournament was great and I thought there was some awesome competition in the 14 and under bracket.

My only concern was the combining of the weights. There is no 180 bracket for 14 and under it goes from 175 to 190. The 190 bracket was combined up to the 230 bracket and that is a 40lb difference. This to me is an accident waiting to happen. I know for a fact out of the 6 kids in this bracket, there was a 178,180,186,215,225 and I am not sure of what the last kid weighed. Unfortunately us whose kids only weigh the 177,180,186 had to wrestle anywhere from 35 to 40 pounds heavy. I beleive we send in an actual weight so the kids can be paired close to their weights.

But this was a great tournament. We have been to it for the past 3 years and my child will not be youth wrestling after this year, but as long as I am part of the club we will continue to come to this tournament.
