16 man bracket with top 4 from each class 1-2A, 3A, 4A, 5A with 5A being the largest class at the time. It was the week after state. I doubt if anyone at KSHSAA will admit this, but I think it had to do with Title 9 and money. I doubt it will come back because of money. Not just what the state would have to pay, but the schools. I'm not sure about the weight allowance
in 81 and 82 a private group formed a tournament called the Sunflower Classic or something like that. They invited the top 3 from each class. That is all that I recall other than the Beloit kids did not participate and there were some great matches. Koehler vs Melvin Douglas was one of the best matches I have ever witnessed at the high school level. Both wrestlers required stitches at the end.
I believe Eric beat Melvin in that match. I know Eric wrestled at Garden City Community College after that. Anyone know where or if he wrestled his last two years of college?
Do other states that split their wrestlers into different classes, 1-3A 4A, 5A, 6A, have grand state formats after their respective state tourney are over?
