You don't know if you got punched??? Please clarify! He already did: "... because i was so hyped up if he did it doesnt matter cuz i still won the match." Whoops. That is more why he DIDN'T CARE. I guess he was so hyped up one wouldn't feel it. Or, he thought it was a head butt, or a push, or - a girly-punch that didn't matter/hurt him, or something else. Bottom line, he didn't care because it obviously didn't hurt (much, Gage is a hard-headed football player!) and he obviously won the match - THEN see his quote above. GO GAGE! Well I think saying someone is going to "OWN" someone else when they have only seen each other once and it ended in OT is a pretty premature statement. Will Gage be attending Brute Nationals? This is to take nothing away from Gage and his well earned victory. This is in reference to the stupid comment that he would own Hicks next year. And I would still like to hear from HIM as to how he doesn't remember being "punched". Everyone is making a big deal about it and I would like to hear Gage's HONEST thought. And I understand being sooo hyped up it wouldn't effect you but you would still know.

I did make a error. Hicks did not lose to Gage in OT. If I remember right.. They both lost to Bullis in OT. & their score was like 11 to 8.

Gage only lost to Pearch not Bullis. All that matters is Gage got third and had a great tournament. The technical violation was for unsportsmanlike conduct for an extra punch or forearm shiver as the wrestlers went off the mat. I was right next to the mat and it was very clear that this was done out of frustration. Gage was oblivious to it as he was just focused on winning and nothing else. Who knows what will happen in the future, but the match belonged to Gage in a hard fought victory.

Thanks Thompson! I again I goofed. Like I stated before... Not to take ANYTHING away from Gage. He was the better wrestler during that match. My frustration was to the PREMATURE comments of domination that came from other unenlightened people.

After Coaching Jake Woten for the past 4 years I feel it is only fitting that I comment on this topic. First I want to start off by saying that our program does not condone what happened this weekend. I do however; think that the punishment was a bit harsh. I do realize that rules are rules and that we do have to live with the consequences of our actions. I feel that the main problem here is consistency. I have witnessed on several occasions this same type of behavior from many athletes and witnessed it several times Saturday after the fact. Maybe I was looking extra hard for it but who can blame me there. I also noticed other actions (some mentioned in pervious posts) that seem worse that what our athlete did and have seen ejections overturned in years past.
Wrestling is probably the most emotional sport I have ever been involved with as an athlete and a coach. It is sometimes hard to keep the emotions in and after the state semifinal’s it is really hard.
After having a couple of days to reflect on this I become angrier about the situation for a few reasons. Number one, it ended a kid’s career without him even knowing it was coming. He never had a chance to prepare for his last wrestling match ever. Also, I feel bad for his parents who have supported him in this sport for the past 8 years and didn’t get to prepare for the last match of his career. I feel bad for his teammates/friends that had to deal with this and try to compete at their best for the rest of the state tournament and for everyone that invested time in making him a better athlete/wrestler over the past 8 years. I know there have been comments about how this young man may appear on the outside. I will say this about him. For those of you who want to hold an opinion of this young man, I am sorry you didn’t get a chance to know him like I have. I won’t say that he hasn’t caused me my share of grey hairs over the past four years but I am glad I had the chance to coach him and better yet get to know him as a person. He is extremely competitive and he sometime lets that show but that is no reason to hold an opinion. He is only a 17 year old kid. I think some of us forget how we were then. I have no doubts that he will learn from this situation and go to do good things.
Thanks for the memories Jake!!!

Well said Coach Larson. Jake Woten is a solid human being and a great competetor. It was horrible to see his season/career end the way it did.
I am really impressed with how mature he was with the whole incident. He was on the floor, being a good teammate and leader, handling it the best he possibly could on Saturday.

I want to echo Coach Larson's comments. I have known Jake Woten for 4 years and he is a good young man. He is emotional and very motivated and I was sorry to hear of his DQ. Right call or wrong call, it was not the right thing to do and I think Jake would admit that. This should not diminish the career of one of Olathe's best ever wrestlers who is also an all-state caliber football player.

Why not wrestle Brute Nationals? I know its not the same but at least he and his family will get that "last match" feeling.

A high school athletic director, who was one of the tournament administrator’s, overheard the statement and asked me if that was the correct call.
Why is a Athletic director/tournament ad getting involved in the officials scoring or calls??????

Well said. I believe even last year an apparent ejection was overturned. Any time a wrestler is not able to finish their year on the mat it is unfortunate.
I wish Jake could have finished out on the mat.

Why is a Athletic director/tournament ad getting involved in the officials scoring or calls?????? Well, If he was a Tournament Administrator, that is his job. He may have been trying to make sure everything was going right. Or, perhaps he is a wrestling fan too and wanted to know if that was the right call rather than start yelling like an idiot or get on a blog site and hammer away like a moron.

I'm not on anyones side here BUT I officiated many years & in many big tournaments..And I wasn't there, but sounds like to me that the kid that lost said some curse words after loosing the match..So what! Unless it was just plain out screaming and throwing a fit, i think it was the wrong call..
