Lorenzo Serna of Emporia will be a senior next year and he is the returning state champion with a 37-3 record last year. He has to be the strong favorite to repeat.
However, he will be challenged by Ryan Kincaid of Miege who had a 16-9 reord last year that included two wins at State. He was only one victory away from placing this past year. Ryan was a transfer and only wrestled a half of a season. Ryan has been wrestling quite a bit this off season. Ryan placed 1st at Kansas Kids State and fourth at Brute Nationals. In freestyle and greco this off season he has three tournament wins and one second place.
Three returning juniors next year who will be strong challengers are state qualifiers Justin Walberg of St. Thomas Aquinas, David Garcia of Newton and Zach Hammer of Lansing.

I wouldn't be to quick to ignore and/or dismiss the eventual Wichita Northwest wrestler (whomever that may be - who knows) Trey Page or Brock Heithouse. Either one, they will be a force to contend with.

Sorry, I just realized you were referencing 5A. Please ignore. You are correct though that either one of those two heavyweights from Wichita NW will be favorites in 285 6A next year. In addition 2009 6A 285 state champion Lucas Vincent looks like he will be attending MU beginning in January 2010 and playing football in Spring practice for the Tigers, so he will probably not be defending his title. But look Oliver Venegas of Olathe North to challenge for the State title at 285 6A in 2010.

Zac Callahan from Mill Valley wrestled varsity as a freshman first-year wrestler and won a Kids State title at 14U 235. He should give some people fits just because of his frame. Once he gets some more mat time he will become a force.
The fact that girls are forced to wrestle at state in the middle of the week is laughably sexist.
