Despite a loss, the Maize South wrestling team competed well and gained valuable experience in its first dual of the season.
Maize South fell to Abilene 54-12 Dec. 1 but coach Matt Kerr was proud of his team's efforts at the dual.
"The kids competed really well," said Kerr. "Abilene is one of the toughest teams in the state and our kids didn't back up and weren't intimidated. We made plenty of mistakes but our effort was solid. It's something we will build on."
Due to sickness and other conflicts, the Mavericks' lineup was open at 119, 130, 135, 140 and 160.
Maize South wrestlers who won their matches on the day were Cayden Good (189) and Jake Rucker. Good and Rucker each won by fall.
Although he ended up losing the match, Maize South's Nehemiah Scott (171) had an exciting matchup against Abilene's Jordan Ward. Ward won the match by decision 3-1 in overtime.
"Both kids were real physical and made an exciting 1-1 match," said Kerr. "Scott fell short in overtime when he slipped in an arm spin, but both of these kids should do well this season."
Kerr said his squad will focus on improving conditioning and correcting some of the mistakes that were made in the first competition.
The Maize South varsity team will travel to Ark City for its next competition while the junior varsity will be at Wichita Southeast. Both competitions are scheduled for Dec. 5.
