I would like to hear thoughts on hair length for wrestlers. Are there rules in place to address this? If so, are they ever enforced?
I ask because I have seen matches stopped several times for a young man to do his hair, adjust his beanie cap and head gear. Sometimes it appears to be a stalling technique. At one particular tournament, the referee finally allowed the young man to wrestle matches without the beanie, and with hair hanging down outside the headgear.
I know that in middle school or high school football, participants are not allowed to wear any type of beanie, skull cap, or do-rag under the helmet for safety reasons. In football, if an athlete chooses to have long hair hanging out the back of the helmet, then the hair can legally be used as a "handle" to tackle.

I do think they should be harder on the hair rule.I also see some kids with long curly hair that put gell in to there hair. This gell gets in the kids eyes and also on there hands.

I think it should be like high school.
3. (4-2-1) Hair shall not extend below the earlobe on the sides and must be above the top of a normal shirt in the back. The hair, in its natural state, shall not extend below the eyebrows in uniform and appearance

I don't know why there is a hair rule. If you have long hair how does that give you an adv.? If you choose to have long hair and it happens to get caught up too bad for you! The hair "covers" are more of a prob than the long hair, just let them wrestle.

That's old school, lets Wrestle. First of all what is wrong with old school. They can wrestle, they just have to follow the rules. I don't know why there is a hair rule. If you have long hair how does that give you an adv.? If you choose to have long hair and it happens to get caught up too bad for you! The hair "covers" are more of a prob than the long hair, just let them wrestle.
Again, just follow the rules. I personally would like to see hair covers done away with along with the long hair. If you want to wrestle, make the sacrifice and follow the rules. What if the child wanted to donate there hair to Locks of love. I am sure that is why they are growing their hair. How about just follow the rules.

Maybe we need to quit letting the kids be in charge, and act like parents. There are going to be rules in the workplace that our children do not like, but to keep a job they have to abide by. Where do you draw the line? The middle of the shoulders, the middle of the back, the butt? I think at all of these stages the hair is too long and causes a problem for the opposing wrestler. Do we stop the match if their hair gets caught and they cry out cause it hurts? Do we stop the match because they are in a cradle and their hair has fallen over their face and they cant breath. I don't have a problem if someones kid wants to have long hair. The rules say they have to wear a hair cover. I think that rule is more than "fair". Either follow the rules or don't wrestle. I personally agree with Mr. Greig, these hair covers are more of a problem, get a haircut.

The problem is that the official's don't get to see the kid's during weigh-in's and it's usually up to the club parents that are doing weigh-in's to decide if they need to cut their finger nails, cut their hair, and if they pass skin checks. This leads to problems when the officials see them on Saturday morning and see hair that is too long and tell a kid to cut it or not wrestle, "well they let me through skin checks last night", or "he's had it all year why are you telling us that now?". It's nobody's fault it's just how the system works currently, until someone can find a better way I'm afraid we're stuck with it like it is.

I'm not sure most clubs know the hair issue is their responsibility during skin checks. I certainly had never thought of it. This probably needs to be addressed in writing to all clubs.

If we change the rules, the kids just learn if they break the rules all the time,we as teachers will change the rues to fit. That is A sad way to look at it.In life we have rules. If we teach the kids they can break the ones they do not like where will it stop?

It's called communication. Kids know they have to make weight, they should know the rules on hair and weighing in in a singlet also. This is one of the reasons I love this sport for kids, it teaches discipline and building a knowledge base for the kids, for the parents and for the coaches.

WOULD YOU TELL HIM TO CUT HIS HAIR. Ark city guy. You can do a search and find many kids that want to donate to Locks of Love. You must not know any kids with cancer. Having a wig really helps with the social aspect of a child dealing cancer. Its a great program and more should donate. Why not follow the college rules Ben Askren got a way with it. If it ends up hurting the long hair wrestler it there problem.

Hank said "That's only because I'm not HIS daddy!" locks of love is great, long hair is cool, follow the rules, and get a skull cap that FITS!!! we cover or tape shoe laces to avoid the same problems, if the cap don't fit, TAPE IT ON.

WOULD YOU TELL HIM TO CUT HIS HAIR. If he wanted to wrestle yes, unless he wore a hair cover. I am pretty sure he would follow the rules. Why not follow the college rules Ben Askren got a way with it. Getting away with something does not make it right. Also these kids are not in College, they are in grade school up to High School. So follow the rules that are set out. Ark city guy. You can do a search and find many kids that want to donate to Locks of Love. Then they can grow it out all year and cut it for Lockes of Love just before wrestling season. Planning is a wonderful thing. Lucas, I understand you are a kid yourself, and trying to push boundaries as you mature. It's part of growing up, so I'll cut you some slack.

Beeson you are the one talking about the work place. please remember they are kids. Locks of love require a min of a ten inch pony tail. And I will be 29 next week and have been a member of this fourm two years longer than you. I dont need your shot in the ribs. At 315lbs I am far from a KID. And I would bet money that You dont get away with anything in College wrestling he was with in the rules or else he would not been able to wrestle.

Beeson you are the one talking about the work place. please remember they are kids. And someday will be adults that will have to follow rules in the workplace. Prepare the kid, not the path. And I will be 29 next week and have been a member of this fourm two years longer than you. So you became a member when you were in High School, and I became a member when my kid started wrestling. Your point? I dont need your shot in the ribs. At 315lbs I am far from a KID. It just wouldn't be right to respond to this statement. Locks of love require a min of a ten inch pony tail. I would bet there is a very small number, if any that are growing it for Locks of Love. Your just giving an excuse. If a kid is doing it for that reason more power to them. he was with in the rules or else he would not been able to wrestle. That's all I am asking, Stay within the rules.
