The operative word is unbelievable and in so many ways. I am exercising a self-impossed cooling off period before I say more than that.

The 152 final between Tripp Hiller and Chase Woofter:

I have never seen a match continue after a coach rushes the mat and pushes the opposing wrestler off of his guy. I certainly understand the concern, but the match is over once this happens.

Right???

In honor of Valentines Day and to prove to my daughter that I am not like an old woman who likes get in on the juicy gossip about the scandals in the neighborhood, I did not get on line yesterday.

Just like my desire for coffee is not an "addiction" it is a "prefrence". Today is a NEW day!

I hope no one was hurt in the 152 match. I appreciate both wrestlers. But what happened?

Chase Woofter threw a textbook head and arm to start the 3rd period. He got the 2 points for the TD and was getting back points when the Olathe South coach ran on the mat and pushed Chase off of Hiller. The match was stopped and the official, Mark Anderson, awarded two back points and one additional point for stopping it while Hiller was on his back. The 5-5 match was then allowed to continue and Hiller won the match 7-5.

I had always thought that when a coach runs on the mat and pushes the opposing wrestler off his guy, that it was essentially throwing in the towel. In this case, the coach greatly assisted Hiller in gaining the win and the Sunflower league title.

Did the coach think the throw was illegal or something about it was illegal?

Was the Olathe South coach thrown out of the tournament and given an unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant misconduct?

The only penalty awarded was 1 point for the "crybaby" rule; stopping the action while in a pinning position. (Note: I am not saying that either Hiller or his coach are crybabies, this is just what I've always heard this penalty called)

If the coach thought the throw was illegal, is it ok for him to run onto the mat and push the other wrestler off his guy? It was not anywhere as bad, but it reminded me of that youtube video making the rounds last year of the little kid's dad who charged the mat and threw the opponent off his young son.

Olathe South did not lose a team point and as far as I could tell, the coach was not even warned.

Coach Mesa was concerned about his wrestler. No penalty was given to him.

I don't know the ruling on this situation, but I think that something should have happened to the coach...Mark Anderson though has been in wrestling a while, so I would trust he knew what he was doing.

you would think no matter the intent of the coach, that it would be match interference, and at least a point awarded to the opponent.

understandably a questionable call, but it's not like it happens often.

From the Olathe News:
The city's only other champion was Olathe South senior Trip Hiller, who took an early 5-0 lead over SM East junior Chase Woofter.

But early in the third period, Woofter got a reversal and appeared to have Hiller pinned with 1:36 remaining. Instead, the officials stopped the bout and Falcons coach Steve Mesa rushed onto the mat.

Confused Lancers fans thought there had been a pin, but Hiller, who has been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy and will wrestle for the Midshipmen, was actually unconscious. "He (Hiller) was passed out," Mesa said. "I could see by his body language that he was passed out." The officials awarded two points for the reversal and a three-point near fall to tie the bout at 5-5, but Hiller eventually was able to continue and earned a reversal to win the bout 7-5.

I was there and the reason why the coach ran onto the mat was because Hiller had blacked out. Seeing that Hiller was blacked out, the second ref had already started to stop the match before Mesa was on the mat. In my mind it was a potentially dangerous situation and Mesa acted in the best interests of his wrestler.

That makes a little more sense then what I was imagining of his kid was just getting stuck, so he ran out to disrupt the match. But I didn't think he could continue if he had went unconscious.

The only confusion on the Lancer's part was why the coach was allowed to push Woofter off Hiller with no consequences.

So in potentially dangerous situations involving legal moves, the coach can push the opposing wrestler off without any penalty? I have no problem with how Steve acted and certainly wish no harm on Tripp. However, the match is over at that time and Woofter should have won.

If the 2nd ref had already started to stop the match before Mesa was on the mat, how is it that Mesa beat the ref to it and pushed Woofter out of the way?

I agree that the safety of the wrestlers should be the primary focus, but if the wrestler was actually unconscious, should he be allowed for his own safety to continue?
