I think some of you are missing the point of this proposal. First of all it would not allow for a dual every Tuesday and Thursday - Will limited to 8 points - which would be less than one a week during the season. Second, since some schools like St. James have no duals - only tournaments - they get more matches then schools that have have alot of league duals. Coaches figure to compete they must eliminate their weeknight duals for all day tournaments. Kind of an arms race. Figuring most will not give up their weekend tournamants - the proposal was for a limited amount of extra points for weekday duals. Something that people in the community have time to attend. I just think Will's proposal was too limited for small programs - allow up to a quad dual. Even giving 4 additionally points for weekday duals - with a limit of 10 matches for each kid over the total of the 4 additional points should satisfy everyone initially.

John -
My point was that MORE competition during the week would inevitably harm the student's ability to focus on class, get homework completed, and simply rest from weekend competition. It's an intuitive argument, from observations as coach and teacher. I can see a coach taking those 8 points and adding 4 more duals rather than 2 larger ones. Also, it's a never-ending argument, but what is the actual purpose for high school sports? I believe that high school sports are not, and never should be, intended to be money-makers. The activity is there for the kids, as student (emphasis on student) athletes to participate in as an extra-curricular activity that enhances their high school experience. Some may not see it that way, and that's fine, but I would venture to state that no student every failed high school because he couldn't shoot a double-leg. More competition points simply creates a slippery-slope that many schools won't want to venture near.

back to the weight class issue;

our varsity hwt couldnt compete this year because he couldnt make it down to 285. he plays football. he could play basketball, run track, play baseball, or even go out for the diving team! but wrestling is the only sport that he cant participate in due to his weight. if you cut out 103 you're doing the same thing. keeping kids from participating.

Four points to be used on weekday nights for a two team dual meet wouldn't impact academics. You DO NOT allow triple duals or quads so that the activity lasts approximately the same amount of time as practice. Parents only worry about showing up at 7 and leaving at 9 just like a basketball game. Students get time after school to study or work on their grades. As far as making weight, wrestle up a class for the dual if it is an issue or just stop cutting weight. Remember, I am a big advocate of matside weigh in. The problem with the current system is that there is NO WAY you can book enough dual team events to get 200 matches. The meets don't exist. Also, you might not wrestle the best individual in these. I hate to go here but lets talk about QUALITY MATCHES. For the top wrestlers who wrestle in state only , they will be lucky to get 10 good matches a year. Another problem is byes. Last year we went to Derby, a great tournament but we burned 4 points for three matches. I like the pool format with a draw into brackets. No one in a Kansas high school is wrestling too many high quality matches. The duals would go a long way towards boosting popularity for the NON wrestling fans. Heck, Doug747, would go watch two pigs fighting under a blanket but the average fan doesn't want to sit in a gym all day.
