I know this is a sore subject and pretty much a beaten horse but......How about a larger penalty for 3rd period stalling to win a match? Lets say 2pts. in 3rd period. Wrestle or pay the price. You know you hate when that happens! This is just to hear some opinions, so what do ya have?

Why?

Stalling in the 3rd period is just as bad as stalling in the 1st or 2nd. Making such a penalty would only serve to further increase the issue of stalling not being called in the first two periods as it should be, WHENEVER it occurs.

Excellent points. I think riding time would be great for high school.

How many times do you see a tie match, and kids laying on bottom stalling waiting to put out a burst to try to escape late and win? I do love it when it backfires and they get turned to lose.

Riding time would get rid of that crap, and force the wrestlers to push the pace.

My opinion in this is that I watch refs in different tournaments out of state, for example cheese head tournament in wisconsin and man them refs don't hesitate to call stalling. it makes them kids wrestle. What i have seen in our state is that stalling is delayed to be called. It seems that refs wait to long to make a stalling call. Not in any place in general pretty much all state. As the same for stalemate.

IMO we see more stalling these days from the neutral position than top or bottom. I believe the refs do a much better job of calling stalling on top or bottom than years ago. I don't know if riding time would improve it more or not. I do have a deep appreciation for wrestlers able to ride effectively without stalling. I find college wrestling kind of boring in comparison to high school, but again I'm not sure if that has to do with riding time or not. It has never appeared to me that the wrestlers give any attention to the riding clock and it seems, rightly or not, that the same guy would have won the match regardless of the riding time.

I just feel that it should be easy to create a standaed for all refs to go by. Maybe 15 seconds of no action, give a warning call to red or green. Give an additional 5 seconds then call stalemate or stall. Keep the wrestlers moving. Do other states have a time frame they work in to make the calls?

IMO if we add riding time and the "push out" rule that greco and freestyle use we could make highschool wrestling exciting. THis would give the advantage to the more aggresive wrestler in the neutral postion and reward the person who have the ability to ride out the clock while forcing the bottom wrestler to work to score instead of waiting for the top guy to get called for stalling.

Personally, I don't want a kid looking for a pushout, I want him trying for a takedown.

I like the push out and the riding time idea. I think it would make the match much more competitive. I agree that I do not want someone working for a push out but it would make the other wrestler more apt to circle to cut off the push out.

i think the push out may be too much, but riding time would make a huge difference in a hurry. i thought of that while at liberty natl's this weekend. riding time would sure change the dynamics of the matches, and erase the alot of the issues with stalling.

We have so much laying around now (STALLING), let's not encourage more by calling it riding time.

Saw some stall calls at a regional that helped push the matches along at a better pace. Even saw a top riding wrestler called for stalling---suprised the crowd!!!

Still saw a lot of long time stalling and then a warning with 15 seconds remaining in the period. What's the sense of that.

Call stalling by the book. It is not a judgement call as some refs alibi on Ask the Ref. The wrestlers, coaches, fans and refs all know when they see it.

My main thought is if there are standards from freestyle-greco or whatever it is that can be used to force your opponate to wrestle it should be concidered for adoption into folkstyle. Gov. body can pick one and go with it. Not going to ever please everyone but win or lose you get to see the best action possible.

I think if we want our sport to grow in popularity the less we have in common with FS/GR the better.

The only thing I don't like about the push out rule is what if the kid turns the opponent at the edge of mat then pushes somebody out? So the aggressive kid continues to shoot till the line then has his back against the out of bounds line then is pushed out? I don't know much about the rule, but that part of it wouldn't seem fair. Also, just because you are pushing somebody out of bounds doesn't mean you are working for a take down either.

Becareful when using that term.."judgement". That is the word a ref can use when they cant explain what they are calling. I have seen stalling call on the top wrestlers within 10 sec of having the bottom wr in nearfall criteria for a one count. I ask how a wr can get a one count then less than 10 sec later be stalling. they said coach " he is up more than 7 pts and in my "judgement" he not switching off". I asked to show me where it says a wr needs to switch off to a different move of they are using to put a wr in nearfall criteria. why is an official looking at a score to base stalling?

Yeah I agree, but my observation has been much like yours, when they get close to the edge it looks more like dancing than wrestling.

Sportsfan02-About the time I agree with you, you post something like "the less we have in common with FS/GR the better". When was the last time you have been to a FS match? I agree Greco is somewhat different but it still teaches valuable skills but Freestyle is by far a more exciting style of wrestling that folkstyle. Every 10-15 seconds you are back on your feet, instead of "working" for the whole period on the mat. You are rewarded for scoring last to push the action, and you rewarded for initiating action. You are entitled to your opinion but I think you far off on this one.
