The Junior Viking Wrestling Club will be hosting a “Dan Gable 17 Stations of Wrestling” clinic on February 20th from 12:00pm to 4:30pm. The clinic will be conducted at Shawnee Heights Middle School at 4335 Shawnee Heights Road in Topeka, KS. The chief technician will be Royce Alger. A complete bio for Coach Alger can be found at the following links. http://www.rockymountainnationals.com/celeb_vondy.html or http://hawkeyesports.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/alger_royce00.html In brief, he is a 3X Big Ten Champion, 2X NCAA Champion, 3X US Open Champion, 2X World Cup Gold Medalist, and he is a assistant coach for the US Olympic Wrestling Team. If our pre-registrations numbers are high enough Dan Gable may also be in attendance. The cost of the camp will be $40 per wrestler. Funds raised through this clinic will partially be used to help fund an Olympic Training Center in Iowa. Those who register for this winter clinic will be offered a discount to attend a week long summer commuter camp to be held in June by Dan Gable and staff in Topeka, KS.

The clinic date is the Sunday after the Tornado Open. It will be a tremendous mid-season opportunity to train with the best for an afternoon. It will help mentally and physically prepare you for Liberty Nationals or an end of the year run towards State. I hope you take advantage of this chance to… “Learn from the Best, Be the Best”.

I have requested a copy of the clinic flyer be posted under the “Camps/Clinics” subcategory from the main page of this website. If you need me to forward you a hard copy, I can be reached at (785) 286-0899. Thanks

We will be taking day of event registrations for this clinic. However, if you know that you have wrestlers that will be participating please email me their names, ages and weights so I can start make plans for the number of participants. My email address is mstanley@haydentower.com or stanleymlne@aol.com.

If you are in town for the Topeka Tornado tournament on Saturday, this clinic offers a perfect reason for you to stay over and take advantage of the opportunity to train with Royce. It will help prepare you for an end of the year run. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have tried to read the flyer for this several times and it continues to show an error and is unreadable. Can you post the syllabus to allow me or others to make a decision as to whether we want our wrestlers to attend?

Who will be at the Topeka clinic, and who will be at the Shawnee Mission clinic?

Jeff, I read you post above. Sounds like, your software may need updating. So, I tried to get the info from the flyers for you.

Confusing…the site lists two places/events on the same day, Shawnee Mission KS, and Topeka, KS. However both flyers state the same location.

Thanks for the help Scott. It appears there is a mix up on the date and times listed for the Shawnee Mission clinic. They are having their clinic on Friday, February 18th from 5:00-9:30 PM. The clinic hosted by the Junior Viking Wrestling Club is at Shawnee Heights Middle School in Topeka, KS at the time and date called out above. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Okay that makes more sense, thanks.

Wish the the dates were different, some people may be weighing in at Topeka on Friday night, then coming home Saturday evening.

Sad for me that the dates weren't opposite...a Topeka pre-camp, Sat tourney, then a Sunday post-camp in KC...darn.

Shawnee Heights Middle School is a very short drive to KC. I hope you are able to attend. It will be a good day. Our facility is also only 20 miles from Lawrence High School, which is hosting the Girls Midwest Regional Championships on Sunday.

I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend the Royce Alger Iowa Clinc on Sunday. The technique drilled was excellent. Our numbers were low which was a little disappointing, but the 30 kids in attendance saw one of the best this sport has to offer demonstrate what it takes to be a winner.

We hope to get Coach Alger back for a summer camp in June and for a kick off clinic in the fall. I will post further information on this forum as it comes available. I strongly encourage more people to take the time to get their kids involved. Our sport has some great roll models. Seeing them and listening to their stories first hand is a very motivational experience.

Yes it was a great clinic. The low number was a little surprising, considering the value. keep me posted for any return camps. He said two, mabe three days, due to his busy schedule. I'd like to see a 3-day. Would the kids stay overnight onsite?

My son attended the camp. Royce Alger showed several simple yet very effective techniques. He also did a great job of making sure all the wrestlers learned the moves by bringing everyone to the center and having the kids demonstrate the move and correcting them if needed. My boy feels he picked up some things that can be put into practice immediately. We hope he can come back this summer and would definitely make the effort to attend.
