In the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage, the Fort Hays State wrestling team tied 24-24. The Black and Gold teams each took six matches in the scrimmage.
Junior Garrett Jones started the dual with a major decision win (13-3) over Caleb Seaton at 125 pounds and gave the Black team a 4-0 advantage. Junior Rory Wilkinson put the Gold team on the scoreboard with a 7-6 decision win over Tyler Dryden at 133 pounds.
A pin by Noah Killip pushed the Black lead to 10-3. Killip pinned Symon Seaton at 6:04 in the 141-pound match. Mitchell Means extended the lead to 14-3 with a major decision win over Brad Little at 149 pounds.
Derek Koehn put the Gold team right back in the match with a pin in the 157-pound class. He defeated Kregg Clarke at 2:27. Also at 157 pounds, Nick Collins won a 6-3 decision over Mark Roundtree to close the score to 14-12 in favor of the Black team.
After two straight losses, Sam Thoman got the Black squad back on track with an 11-0 major decision over Nathan Shipley to put the Black team up 18-12. Travis Budke made a late charge to win 5-3 in overtime over Josh Rodriguez and cut the lead in half to 18-15.
The Gold squad pulled ahead, 21-18, on a pin from Zack Grimes at 5:58 against Austin Tatro in a 184-pound match. In the heavyweight bout, John Close won a 4-3 overtime decision over Airen Maxwell for a 24-18 Gold team lead.
Benny Armstrong gave the Black team their first win in four matches. He won a 9-4 decision over Steven Kyler to pull the Black squad to within three at 24-21. The Black team tied the dual at 24-24 when Adam Ludwin won a 3-1 decision over Garrett Jones in the final bout.
In exhibition matches that were not a part of the Black and Gold dual, Black won all four matches. Freshman Kregg Clarke pinned freshman Eddie Creek at 2:21 in a 149-pound bout. Freshman Jace Nordyke won a close 3-2 decision over freshman Matt Ziegler in another 149-pound match. At 184-pounds, freshman Jon Inman took a major decision win (15-4) over sophomore Antonio Starr. Junior Jace Campbell won an 8-4 decision over CJ Napier in the final exhibition match.
The Tigers open the 2012-13 regular season at the Central Missouri Open on Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
