15th-Ranked Tigers Hang On for 24-15 Dual Win Over 17th-Ranked Grizzlies

The 15th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team defeated 17th-ranked Adams State in dual action by a score of 24-15 on Thursday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The win improved Fort Hays State to 8-5 in dual action for the season.
The Tigers were already guaranteed 12 points with the Grizzlies open at 125 and 197 pounds, but they struggled in the eight contested matches with Adams State winning five.
FHSU started the dual up 6-0 with the forfeit win for Garrett Jones at 125 pounds, but Adams State battled back to square the dual when Martin Ramirez scored a 7-0 decision over Rory Wilkinson and seventh-ranked Ryan Fillingame defeated fourth-ranked C.J. Napier at 141 pounds 4-2.
Mitchell Means put the Tigers back in front by six at 149 pounds with a second-period pin of Casey Lynn in 3:27, but Adams State fought back once again to tie the dual and then take the lead 15-12 by winning the next three matches by decision. Daniel Kelly had a third period takedown that erased Derek Koehn's riding time advantage and held on for a 5-4 win at 157 pounds. Justin Samora had a takedown of Sam Thoman late in the third period at 165 pounds to break a tie and win 3-1. Jarrod Purvis picked up a 9-5 win in the second overtime period at 174 pounds when he scored a reversal and three near-fall points when trailing 5-4 in the second 30-second overtime period.
Zack Grimes stopped the Adams State momentum with a 4-2 decision over Mario Garcia to tie the dual once again at 15-15 then the Tigers benefitted from Adams State being open at 197 pounds to go up 21-15. Alex Feldkamp took the forfeit win, allowing Tanner Kriss (ranked No. 4 at 197 pounds) to wrestle up a weight and defeat Adams State heavyweight Taylor Stam 7-0 to seal the FHSU win 24-15.
Fort Hays State travels to the Nebraska-Kearney duals on Saturday (Jan. 19), where it will face No. 10 Colorado Mesa, Hastings College, and Northern State University.
