Usually we start this conversation with how weak one regional is over another.
everyone has to drive sometime.

I wonder if all of those schools budgeted an extra $2000 to make that trip? I would also think that their gate take will greatly suffer.

Really??? Are you guys going to sit here and cry about your Regional assignments? Go wrestle! I saw several of these teams at the Kickoff Classic in Tulsa at the beginning of the month before the season. At least three of these kids made it all the way down to The Oklahoma Open just last weekend during season. Every year Will Cokeley and Chief get on here and complain about the travel restrictions and how unfair it is that they cant drive to attend The Beast in the East or Blah Blah Blah....and NOW you want to bitch and moan about a 2 hour trip to Pittsburg? Give me a break. No matter what happens some are always going to WHINE WHINE WHINE.

Remember once when we were 4A we were sent 4 hrs away twice. Once we had a HWT in the finals and got home on Sunday morning at 4am. We are 2.25 hrs away this year...much better! You City folk have to realize that Kansas is larger the 20 mi radius of KC.

Common sense? If chief is correct and says these metro schools will have to pony up $2000 for this one day trip to Pittsburg for regionals, then let's think what Pittsburg has to do for regionals in volleyball, basketball (boys and girls), baseball, softball, cross country, golf (boys and girls), tennis, debate, forensics, scholar bowl, etc. I listed 12 activities and I am sure there are more.
I have never seen or heard Pittsburg people on forum complaining about driving 2 hours to a regional. The complaint used to be that KSHSAA restricts traveling too much and now the complaint is KSHSAA makes you travel too much.
Some people just complain way too much. Pitt will run a great tournament!
Good Luck to all!

In 1994, as a Proud Greenback in Pratt, Ks we traveled to Ulysses for Regionals, when the speed limit was 55mph. I have driven all over this state as a wrestling coach for Regionals, I was in Pittsburgh last year and they run a GREAT regional. It will NEVER be easy and in 321-A the state sends teams to places where there are not even a motel in the town, so you have to travel. In the last 4 years we have driven back each night of regionals and driven back the next day. How bout promoting the positive side of our sport....you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar

Coach Brown,
1. No one said Pittsburg would not run a good regional. I have competed and attend MANY wrestling tournaments in Pittsburg over the years. They do a wonderful job with great facilities for the wrestlers and fans.
2. Yes I am sure EVERYONE in the state has had to drive at least two hours for a tournament / Regionals / State. When you are dealing with smaller schools that are more spread out youwil always have that issue.
This topic was not started in anyway to knock Kansas Wrestling or Wrestlers or knock Pittsburg ability to host a wonderful regional.
It was to point out that in this situation, it does not appear that KSHAA was looking out for the best interest of the majority of schools, student atheletes or fans when they made the decision to host a 8 team regional in a location that makes 7 teams travel 2 hours, spend additional dollars for room and board and could be a safety issue if weather comes into play.
Take off your "my teams has to travel back and fourth hat" and look at the FACTS.
Not trying to catch any flies or trying to sway anyone one way or another. Just doing what this forum was made for, having a healthy conversation aboout "things" that are happening in Kansas Wrestling.

Ok...Here are some FACTS. St James and St. Thomas Aquinas CAN NOT host regionals because the head of the Catholic Church in the area is afraid a GIRL may or may not wrestle in the regional. That leaves 5 other schools that are able to host the regional. Did any of those other schools put in to host a regional or is Pittsburg the only school that volunteered? If Pittsburg was the only one to put in they should get the bid. If all 5 schools put in then the regional should rotate to a different school each year. This means every 5 years Pittsburg will get the regional. Don't complain about the regional assignment if your school did not try to be part of it.

Beeson, Sorry you can't state "here are some facts" if all your sentences start with DID any and IF.

Room? Why would you get a room for a 1 day tournament that is only 2 hours away?
Board? Most schools have the food situations set up with parents/boosters (sandwich items, fruit, etc.).

My assumption (and past experience) would tell me they would drive down the nite before. If not you are waking up your kids at 5 a.m..
Weigh in 5:15 Eat Breakfast 5;30 Leave for Pittsburg 6:00 am Arrive in Pittsburg 8:00 Change / warm up and ready to wrestle by 9.
Can it be done without an overnight stay. YES Do I think a kid can perform at his best. No
We can agree to disagree. Thats ok.

Beeson, Sorry you can't state "here are some facts" if all your sentences start with DID any and IF. Eight Sentences. Three were factual, One was a question, Two were statements, and Two were opinions. "Some Facts" would be justified with three facts.

In your past experience you would know you have to weigh-in on site because it is regionals. There are no home weigh-ins in a 1 day regional.

Board? Most schools have the food situations set up with parents/boosters (sandwich items, fruit, etc.). It has been explained to me that Johnson County schools never travel without a hospitality room and their personal chef. Thus the need for a hotel.

I have been doing some more research.
1)Pittsburg will have three mats and wrestling starts at 10:30.
2)Weigh in will be allowed till 8:30. That means you can leave by 6:00 am and make the two hour drive in time to make weigh in.
3)The tournament should be over by 9:00 putting you home around 11:00.
4)I see no reason for any of the schools to have to get a hotel and stay overnight. I see no added expense to any of the schools attending this Regional.
