That was a great match with a couple of really nice scrambles between Porsch and Cavanaugh. And that arm spin Porsch hit was slick. Great job by both athletes.

And the referee totally gave away the other 120lb semifinal match of that bracket. Kester was robbed!

Robbed?! He lost that match himself. Instead of cutting Younger he kept trying to return him. If he would of cut him the 2 times he would of only gave up 2 points for escapes instead of 4 points for stalling. You have to wrestle smarter than that in the state semifinals. I guess i dont see where he was robbed.

Because Coach Malay, as you said Tyler kept trying to returning him to the mat. That is not stalling. In college it would have been positive riding time. The ref told the coach that he was hanging on to the legs, which he was not! He also was not driving his opponent out of bounds.
The ref also let the the same thing go on,for the whole third period and then dinged Kester for stalling with only 20 seconds left in an attempt to give the match to his opponent, however Kester quickly cut him and took him down to tie it up.
You might be one of 2 people in the building that thinks it was right for the ref to simply give the match away in the state semi finals.
But yes, it was very poor coaching he should have cut him and took him down. Kester took him down twice in a matter of seconds.

I won't argue the stalling calls but the rules were not followed at the end of the match and 90% of the arena was confused. When Kester was called for the 4th stalling Younger was awarded 2 points. The action should have been stopped at this point, about 20 seconds left, and Younger should've been given choice of position. I'm assuming he would've chose to remain on bottom with a 4-3 lead after the 2 points. Kester probably would've given up an escape and tried to get a takedown to tie up the match. Assuming he was able to do this, they go into overtime tied 5-5 and a takedown wins the match.
What actually happened was action was never stopped. The escape happened after the double stall point, then the takedown happened to tie the score at 5 to send it into overtime. 13 seconds into overtime an official sitting in the chairs told the side official about the rule awarding choice after the 2 point stalling. So the side official stopped the match to tell the lead official. She decided to restart the overtime period and give Younger choice. He chose down and had a minute to get an escape or another stall call. This left Kester having to get a ride out just to get to double OT or a turn for the win. That's a hard position to be in for anyone.
Regardless of the what you think stalling is, the end of the match was officiated wrong.

I agree the end of the match may not have been officiated correctly, but there is not doubt top guy stalled. Bottom guy hit a stand up EVERYTIME from bottom top guy hung on the waist (not the legs) but he did NOT return him. Only time they would go back to the mat is when bottom guy tried to hit a standing switch, the switch would be it after about 7-10 seconds of top wrestler just hanging on. It did not appear to me that he ever tried to elevate or trip. The end of the match was confusing partly because the score didn't get put up correctly. I honestly don't know if it was the correct call to give him choice in overtime or not I have never seen that before. But honestly if top guy would have cut him most of those times he took him down at will it appeared.
And the comment about only 2 people in the gym thinking it was stalling. I disagree as it appeared most of the gym was standing up calling for stalling. But most of those people didn't watch the entire match because they were watching the other semi finals match between the #1 & #2 ranked kids in the state.
Either way these 2 semi final matches were probably the best of the night. Congratulations to all 4 of these young warriors.

You are right, there were a couple bad calls. He should of been dq'ed for stalling a long time before that. And i believe that a match doesnt get stopped immediately after the 2 points, i thought it was after the next restart.

You could be right on the restart rule. I was confused on what happened so I went and asked the line of refs watching the semis. I'm not sure if they went out of bounds after the takedown or not, if the rule is after a break from action. That's not a situation we see play out very often. Let alone in a close match. And random thought, what if Kester got the takedown during the first 13 seconds of overtime?

If he gets a takedown in the 1st 13 seconds then people are on here saying the other wrestler got screwed. Unfortunately in a match like this someone is going to feel they get screwed.

I find it odd that a match Kester scores 5 points in, he is dinged 4 times for stalling, yet in his quarter final match which he won 1-0, he was never dinged once..................things that make you go hmmmmmmmm.

He was dinged that many times because he couldn't stop the stand up, and never tried to return him. I didn't see his 1st match, but if the other wrestler wasn't able to stand up against him maybe it was a complete different situation. So it is very hard to compare from match to match.

He couldnt return him. I used to stand up and make them return me if not id wait to get a stall call then go for an escape. Its how it works. Kester should have cut him before getting all those stall calls. Why leave it up to the ref anyway. Score more points so that doesnt happen.

Geyer you're right that he couldn't stop the stand up. But I felt he did try to return him to the mat. The rule states that he has to attempt to return him to the mat, not actually return him.
As Peter Griffith stated the I felt tje other wrestler was working to get the stalling call. It was a good strategy! Most of the time was spent hand fight handfighting, WHEN Kester lost control he would attempt a crotch lift or trip. He never hung on to the leg as the official reasoned for the stalling call! I have watched the film several times.
As previously stated Tyler should have been told by his coach (me) to cut him and take him down as he seemed to take easily him down at will. BAD COACHING!
One wrestler got 2 takedowns and an escape in the state championship semifinals and lost, while the other wrestler earned one escape and got cut once to earn the win.
Also, how often do you see a third official intervene in a match they weren't involved in?
The overall just of it is the match was VERY POORLY officiated. The official tried to give the match away by giving the stalling call with only 18 seconds left, then they had the score wrong, then they did't know the rule, they attempted to raise Kester's hand, they let them wrestle for almost 20 seconds on their feet, and then restarted sudden death with Kester having to hold down his opponent for the whole minute in the same situation where he gave up 4 points for "stalling".

I have great respect for you as a coach taking responsibility as far the coaching aspect. And I agree the end was a cluster, and I was as confused as anyone. I think the official gave 2 at the end, but the table failed to give it and only put 1 up Then it got real crazy 13 seconds into overtime. I agree if it was said he was hanging on the legs that is not correct, but it did appear that he hung on the hips, and tried a crotch lift once or twice. the stall call with 18 seconds left probabaly could have been called much quicker and that may have made a diffrence in the match. Like I said earlier this was a great match very strange match but a great match.
