Coach Parks' thread on moving to consolation 2-2-2 got me thinking....what rule changes would be good for our sport? If there's a general consensus I would be happy to submit proposals at year's end. Never done it before, but I'll figure out how and get it submitted. Here are my thoughts so far:
1. 2-2-2 on the backside 2. Clarification/removal of videotaping rule. I think we'd all agree that it's archaic in the 21st century and needs to be changed. 3. Moving to the "cylinder" rule for nearfalls/falls out of bounds. I would love to see us go to college out-of-bounds rules, but I doubt that's ever going to happen. It's impossible for an official to watch to see if knees are down while simultaneously watching the pinning area, and if we moved to the cylinder we would at least be taking a step in the right direction.
Any others come to mind?

The fact that girls are forced to wrestle at state in the middle of the week is laughably sexist.

To me out of bounds is a mess. It is crazy for a ref to have to try and look for a fall/back, and see if defensive wrestler is in, and see if offensive wrestler is in, and see if the offensive wrestler is in AND if a knee comes up. CRAZY! I think a ref should have two things to watch: 1. is anything in bounds-wrestle. 2. If danger-blow the whistle (danger means whether both wrestlers are in bounds or not, like if a mat is too close to a table, stop, too close to other wrestlers, stop, if on floor, stop). Really seems simple to me. As a coach, there is no way I could argue a takedown was there if they are on the floor, or close to table, etc.(danger). It’s like driving a car: If I approach an intersection with a green light, but I see a car/human/dog I am going to stop. As long as ref’s don’t start texting and reffing, we should be good to go. I don’t really like the “cylinder” either. Another thing to imagine/think about. If something is inbounds on the mat, its in. If everything is off the mat BEYOND reaction time (so like a hop for adjustment, or step, etc. let it continue) then it is out. So if it floats, its out. On the line, wrestle. Danger, stop.

I agree! All matches should follow the 2-2-2 format. The the short periods only work against the wrestlers, the wrestling and wrestlers are why we all are there? We should never short change the kids because adults are in a hurry.

I agree with Mr. Parker's push for those three rule changes. High school should follow college wrestling rules, except I hate riding time. Score points and scramble, it is much more exciting for the average fan to watch and even the veteran fan. Grow the sport by moving forward.

I agree with all of the above as well. These wrestlers train to wrestle a minimum of 6 minutes, so why take that away from them regardless of where they are in the bracket. Another minute of wrestling could completely change the outcome of many matches.
I'd also like to see the high school division adopt the 4-pt nearfall rule that the collegiate division currently has in place. It provides more excitement in my opinion. It also gives more incentive to stay off your back!

I agree with Coach Erickson on out of bounds. MUCH easier for wrestlers, referees, coaches, fans....all involved. NFHS should follow NCAA on this change as it has been one of the best changes NCAA has made in decades. Ask just about anyone involved and they all seem to agree.

Absolutely on the stalling rules. I feel stalling needs to be called more often. Seems that it gets called a lot more at regionals and state, when its a bigger stage. (As it should be all year). Seems some of the wrestlers don't understand when they get a warning, since all year long they have gotten away with it.
