Hope you're right Wyatt. However, I am going to pick Smith Center, but would really love to see Schmitty get him a title at Hoisington!

24 out of 56 semi finalists (43%), and 10 out of 28 finalists (36%) all came from the Goodland regional.

Goodland Regional Production: Team Champion: Scott City 6 of the top ten teams: 1 Scott City, 3 Hoxie, 6 Norton, 7 Colby, 9 Phillipsburg, and 10 Goodland 6 of the 14 Individual champions and 34 of the 84 state placers. I do believe Western Kansas represented itself very well this weekend.

#1 Wrong in regards to the Western Kansas having more schools than the east. #2 There has been a major population shift in the past 30+ years from the West to the East.
#3 The domination by Western Kansas used to be even greater. Prior to the expansion to 6 places, it was not unusal for over half the State Medals to be won by wrestlers from the Western Kansas Regional.
As the population continues to shift, there will be a continued lessening of Western Kansas wrestling domination. When was the last time a school smaller than 3A won the 321A Tournament. . .

Most 2a and 1a schools in the Northeast area don’t have wrestling programs. Takes away from shooting hoops!

Most? 1A. . . maybe, but more 2A do than don't; esp.when co-op agreements are considered

When was the last time a school smaller than 3A won the 321A Tournament. . . From 2007-09 Smith Center won three consecutive titles in wrestling as a 2A. Prior to that Hoxie won back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003, and in 1998 and 1999 as a 2A. Going back even further St. Francis in 1996 and 1997, Stockton in 1993 and Atwood in 1989 all won titles as 2A programs. No 1A programs have won a team title in the past 30 years.

And no non-3A has won it in the past ten years.
Also, Classification sizes are not static. If you go back 10, 20 years ago you will see tne cutoff between 2A and 3A were larger than tney are today.
My point is that there has been, and will continue to be, a population shift; and I am speaking basically to 321A. The schools with bigger populations will have a statistical advantage in competing for State titles. The wrestling culture and tradition will keep Western Kansas, and especially Northwest Kansas, competitive. . .but it will be a numbers game.

Good list; Do any of those schools co-op with others.

I am not sure what happened to Smith Center's 220 pounder that was ranked number #1 but sure looks like with him they would have been in real contention for the title

He did not make weight. I've heard more than one story of what happened, and i hope that one of the stories i heard is not true. He is a nice kid, and i felt bad for him.

Kyle, I believe Horton’s final season was 2013-14 and Hiawatha’s was 2016-17. Hard to believe with the state placers they produced over the last 25 years.
Greg, a few of these schools did co-op in the past briefly but none were represented this year. No kids program = no future.

I feel for Kuhn. That had to have been difficult for him to watch the whole weekend. Would his points been the difference from 1st to 4th? Hard to tell. They would have been in the top two for sure.
Congratulations to Scott City and Coach Jon Lippelmann on his fifth state championship! They held off good runs from Hoisington and Hoxie in the end.

This story is from his father. I was told he checked on the check scale and was on weight. Went over to the official weigh room and was .2 over. He checked on a couple scales and they told him if he wants to challenge the scale he needed to get his coach. He went to grab his coach amd when he came back they told him that was disqualified for leaving the weigh in area. If this is true l, i really feel bad for him. After speaking to him, he seems like a nice kid that made a mistake and it is something he will have to live with forever. Good luck to Dalton at FHSU next season on their football team.
