My position on this has not changed from a year ago except that my son is just finishing his first high school season. Watching this season go by for my son's team, I am even more convinced that this JV Regional concept would be good for a lot of wrestlers. I have seen kids from the JV team place and even win several varsity tournaments when the first team teammate was out for injury. I still think wrestling should handle this more like track and field where more than one individual could compete for Regional and State competition. I believe that this JV Regional concept is a way it could happen.
I believe you could find a weekend sometime before Regionals to hold the meet. It seems like many teams take a weekend off from tournaments close to Regionals. I am not sure how many should move on to the Regionals, but I would think at least the top two. If it was only two you should have a second place challenge if needed between the second and third place finisher.
I would also let the JV qualifiers points count for team points at both Regionals and State. This is the way it is done for track and field. I think it could work for wrestling too. We all know this would give some teams with a lot of strong wrestlers an advantage at State but it works for track and field. I think it would just be a change that wrestling would get used to. In a sense the State competition should be really more about determining who the best wrestlers are in a weight class. The way it is now some of them might not even be getting the opportunity to compete there. I believe someone posted last year the best way to determine the best team would be a State duals competition format.

I have thought this would be a great idea for years, and I think you would see state placers from the same school more than you think. Many of the top programs have JV kids who would have a real chance of placing in the top 6. I know of one state champion we had that won the last two ranking matches in overtime. Then pinned his way through the state tourney.

FYI: In Michigan a school can take more then 1 wrestler at a weight class to state. They are limited however to taking only 14 total wrestlers. But if there was a team that had two outstanding wrestlers at the same weight they could both participate. But that would mean that they would have to be open at another weight. I am not sure if both wrestlers can score points for their team or not. It has happened before that two wrestlers from the same school competed against each other in the state finals.

Some schools would possibly finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at a regional. I think of Clay Center at 160 as a possibility to that.

It would sure add some excitement for the JV wrestlers at year end. The possibility of qualifying for Regionals and ultimately State would give them added incentive.
