Western Kansas dominates. I wrestled in the CTL when I was in High School and Western Kanas wrestling is far superior. The 3-2-1A State championship in Hays is so intense compared to the coliseum in Wichita. I believe that alot of the 3-2-1A teams could easily handle state contenders from the east. I beleieve that Hoxie would and could possibly beat them all in dual's.

One reason is that the east/west only takes seniors. Many of western kansas' best wrestlers last season were underclassman - with a few notable exceptions (eg Staab, Ubben, N. Johnson, etc).

Another consideration is the boundries for East and West. Last year we had Dukes, Basehor, representing the East and Gentry, Rossville, the West. Thus the name change to the Senior Classic!

Hey vikefan there are alot of peole in western ks. that think there isn't a team in the state that could hang with HOXIE this year. And thats with Hoxie losing two wrestlers to season ending injuries. Before you say that the East dominates you might want to talk to some of the teams that came to Colbys Dual tourn, otherwise people might think you are not to bright.

I'm going to have to say east, but there are good teams from all over the state. I agree that Hoxie usually has a tough team. But, who else in the west is that great?

It switches from year to year, but overall I think the Western half (from Topeka and on west) is usually better. KC schools have good teams sometimes (like Blue Valley Stillwell a few years ago, I think), but last year the top three in 6A were from the west, Carrol, Goddard, and Ark City are all in the west, Clay Center, Colby, and Abilene are all in the west, and Hoxie and Norton are from the west. Other teams that are good/great every year are Emporia, Garden City, Derby, Maize, as well as some other teeny schools. I think Effingham is in the East, and there are usually some pretty good eastern teams (Scrawnee Whites this year), but I think teamwise, the West has it won easy.

to add some more: Zach Roberson, Shawn Bunch, Joe Johnston, Zach Allen. All who went and wrestled D1. I'm sure I am missing some, and know there are many from the west as well. All in all, the west is better as teams because they have farther distances from school to school. Heck, if Johnson County selected one or two teams out of all 17 schools, they would be pretty good.

Sure Vikes, combine 17 schools and have a great team. But keep in mind that the average class size at a Hoxie is 30 +/-.
After two season ending injuries, Hoxie only has 21 kids on its entire roster.
Yes, you can name several more kids from eastern Kansas. #1 because most eastern Kansas folks can't name hardly anyone who wrestles in western Kansas. But #2, given the difference in population base to draw upon, you should have more.
Heck, I suspect that some of your high schools have almost as many students as Sheridan County has people (2,500 +/-).
But if you are looking at tradition how many eastern Kansas schools - even with the additional numbers - can match the long track record of history of a Colby, Goodland, Hoxie, Oberlin, Norton.......
Shawnee Heights, Washburn Rural, and Shawnee Mission East all came to the Colby Dual Tournament. Shawnee Heights and SME are ranked in their respective classes. The three went a combined 5-10 in the pool portion of the meet.

those are great points. Just another reason that it is hard to compare the two. Both have excellent records and I don't take anything away from western ks.

what Les forgot to mention is that washburn only had 7 wrestlers and we wouldve had to pin in every weight to tie a team. Our results shouldnt even be added in that total

It's obvious that as a whole team, western kansas dominates eastern kansas, but in terms of individuals, the east does tend to produce a few more outstanding wrestlers. All of this can basically be attributed to the kids programs that the sides of the state run. Other than the East Kansas Wrestling Club, there's no real good program here for kids to get started in and thus they end up starting in high school. Western schools usually have a lot better kids programs. That means that while they have less total kids, they have a vast greater amount of experienced wrestlers to draw from which means a better overall team. But I think that if the east started to build up its programs, then you would see a dominance come from the east, because those who have come through the east kansas club from childhood usually end up dominating the hell out of anyone else, and that's where the majority of the undefeated state champions come from.

The question which is better, East or West? Is a pretty dumb question. It is very simple. The people who live in Western KS, are gonna say west is better, and the people who live in the East, will argue the east is better. I think that it is a dumb question, and all that will come of it is a bunch of contraversy. Personally from experience, I think the West is better, but that may be just cause I live here, and historically they have been better in 3-2-1A in team state championships. But Easterners will argue that. So there really is no right answer, it is a matter of where you live and who you've wrestled.
