I thought I'd have some fun with the North Central Kansas League (NCKL) which consists of the following teams currently: Abilene, Chapman, Clay Center, Concordia, Marysville, Wamego.
Here is a few questions to see if anybody knows the answers...I've been learning a lot about the league through some research and it's kinda interesting, but let's see if anybody can figure some out...also if you have any good questions put them down. (I'm on the cusp of having a few answers and will post upon further research, but will allow guesses 1st)
1. Has Wamego ever won the NCKL title? If yes what year was the last title won and how many all together do they have?
2. If no to question 1, out of the remaining 5 teams in the league what team has gone the longest without claiming the league title, and how many years has it been?
3. Has an NCKL guy won state at every weight class as we now know them? Can you name a guy for each weight plus school?
4. What brother combonations in the NCKL have had the most State Championships won between them?...Think along the lines of Panthers, Tigers, and Bulldogs. Put the top 3 and # won between brothers if tie put tie and just count as 1 space.
5. What league team has gone the longest without a State Finalist? (Think 1996 to 2003)
BONUS: What team has gone the longest without a State Champion?

Ha ha, Aaron as I am the guy with all the knowledge I will answer your questions
1. No, Wamego has never won the NCKL, and thus the answer to the second part of your question is none!
2. And seeings how the asnwer to question 1 is no the answer to question 2 should come as no surprise to you Aaron, and that is Chapman. Thats right your alma mater has gone the longest without winning the NCKL. 31 years its been since Chapman claimed the NCKL title (1973).
3. Close ... here they are (just a few, not all of them)all State Champions
103. Tovar - Abilene 98, Chris Ngo-Concordia (93) 112. Tony Dong - Concordia (89) 119. Jon Dong - Concordia (89) 125. Jorden Close - Clay Center (03) 130. 135. Jon Dong - Concordia (91) 140. Brandon Pfizenmaier (96) 145. Brandon Pfizenmaier (97 & 98) 152. Nate Smith - Abilene (98) 160. 171. Ray - Clay Center (89) 189. Jacob Strait - Concordia (02) 215. Matt Vogelsburg - Marysville (98 & 99) 275. Cory Casteel - Abilene (97)
Not sure about those three open wight classes with the information that I have. The weights were changed starting in 1989. But before that someone from the NCKL won State in every weight class. If I find the ones for the three open ones I'll put them in there.
4. The Dongs From Concordia have 5 betwen the three of them. Pfizenmairs from Clay Center have 4 between the two of them. As do the Ngo's from Concordia. Vogelsburgs from Marysville have 4 between the three of them.
5. Totally guess here only because I didn't want to take the time to look it up but I believe Chapman has not had a state finalist the longest (I know Kern from Wamego won it in 2000 so its not Wamego)
Bonus - Once again Chapman wins this honor.

If my memory serves me correctly. Marysville with a finalist in 1999 is the team with the longest drought without state finalists in the NCKL.

Yes billy upham was in the finals in 01' against Sheldon Pfizenmair from Clay. So Marysville has gone the longest without a finalist.

Thanks Coach....my poor Irish.
While it has been quite a few years since Chapman has won the league title, Nigel and anybody else extra bonus can you name the coach of that Irish team that last won NCKL?

As far as the last state finalists the NCKL had, it would be kern and upham from the 2001 tournament.

The only voids are at 130 and 160, but maybe after this year they will be filled.
Clay Center has beaten Chapman 36-30, Wamego something like 44-28, and Marysville pretty handily (don't remember the score).
They are at Abilene Thursday the 5th at 6:30 and host Concordia Thursday the 12th at 6:30.

Aaron - Coach Ron Tacha guided Chapman to the top of the NCKL in '73. He was an outstanding wrestler from Norton and K-State. I believe we also won NCKL in '71 under the tutelage of another outstanding NW Kansas wrestler - Jim McDougal (Atwood). Ray Arveson, C'73
P.S. - I'm sure we were champions or co-champions 2 of 3 years from '71 - '73.
P.P.S. - Josh Patton, state champion 1993, Chapman, 152 lb. Greg Kriesch, state finalist 2002, Chapman, 135 lb.
P.P.S.S. - If that darn Norton hadn't bumped up to 4A for one year we would have had another finalist/possible champion - Aaron, you know who I'm talking about.

Some NCKL goofs: I mentioned on another link that Beloit won its state titles as a member of the NCKL. NOTE: They didn't join until 1987-1988 school year
______________________________________________
Chapman won the league title 6 out of 7 years from 1968 to 1973 under 3 different coaches:
67-68 Ron Holm 68-69 Ron Holm 69-70 Ron Holm 71-72 Jim McDougal 72-73 Ron Tacha
PS....Did you Know that Jim McDougal wrestled for KState and faced the legendary Dan Gable on 4 occasions? He lost all 4 by the following wrestling the 137lb class:
11-3, 10-0 at Big 8 championships both during Gable's sophomore year
Pinned in 2:58, pinned in :43 seconds gable's jr year
_______________________________________________
On response to the P.P.S.S. yea I think I do know who you are talking about, not a bad golfer either get's that from his pop huh?
More fun questions:
1. How many NCKL titles did Concordia win prior to Coach Moore being the head man?
2. This one took some looking up... The late 70's/early 80's was rough on one league team who went 5 years without winning a league dual. 4 part question:
A. What year did the streak end? B. Who was the team with the losing streak? C. What team did they defeat? D. What was the final score?
3. In 1966-1967 school year DCCHS now Chapman joined the NCKL to bring the total to 4 schools in the league...name the other 3.

Dear Coach Moore,
You are right, I compleltly skipped over 92,03 when I was looking through the arcives, I stand corrected.
Just a few more facts,
Concordia leads the NCKL with 14 Championships since its inception.
Also most individual state championships with 20 I believe.
Here are some indivudual stats these are for 1 season(please correct me if I am wrong)
Most Wins - 39 = Danny Grater Clay Center (03)
Most Takedowns - 153 = Trevor Charbonneau Clay Center (02)
Most Falls - 28 = Jeremy Lane Marysville (92)
Most Technical Falls - 13 = Trevor Charbonneau Clay Center (02)
Most Escapes - 50 = Jacob Marrs Clay Center (03)
Most Reverses - 56 = Casey Cole Abilene (00) Note: This is also a State Record
Most two point near falls - 25 = Casey Cole Abilene (00)
Most three point near falls - 79 = Billy Upham Chapman (00)
Fastest Fall 0:06 seconds = Ross Taplin Abilene (02)
