I did not post this new topic to be an A S S or to complain how the rankings r wrong. I know that Coach Newcomb and all the other ranking coordinators work hard to get these rankings together. So please do not take offense. I am just a bit confused on some of these results....

A few questions:
- Why is Cory Dreiling ranked 5th @ 125lbs when he took third last yr. He is ranked behind guys that he did better than last yr.

Example, he beat Charles Knox at state last yr in the consolation finals and Knox is ranked 1st in the weight class. Have i missed something? If he beat the # one ranked guy and is the highest returning placer then shouldnt he be ranked 1st? maybe i am wrong and he was beat earlier this season by the guys ranked ahead...

- Why is Jared Patterson not ranked at all at 140lbs? He is a returning SQ and 3rd place state medalist at 135lbs.

I also understand that he wrestled at a tourney at 140 and plans on going 140. Is he not ranked because his coach did not turn in the maize rankings sheet? And if this is the case then why not just put him in the rankings? one knows that he is wrestling 140 and is the ranking coordinator allowed to use his common sense and rank him or does he have to see official maize coach paperwork to confirm this? If i was a ranker i would just put him in, but maybe there is some unwritten rule that one just doesnt do this.

- If a ranker uses good judgement and uses his own opinion about a wrestler that has a coach that hasnt turned in his team rankings sheet, can he still put that kid in the rankings? I have seen in a few weights where it is barren(ex. 119lbs, 6A) and i know just off the top of my head that at least one kid should be ranked that isnt at 119lbs, 6A. That kid is Tim Munyan. He to me is a very capable individual that should be ranked.

Also Kenny Aubry(sms, 135lbs). He has is a returning SQ, undefeated and has beat a ranked Aaron Bartels twice and yet is not ranked. I figure those two probably arent ranked because their coaches have not responded to the ranker. So i ask again, can u put these kids in w/ good judgement even though their coach did not respond to u?

- Just wanted to correct a few errors:
Rankings say following r not placers, but are:
- Tommy Edgemon(GOD), state champ; Chino Elsrode(OLS), 3rd place medalist
Rankings say following r placers, but are NOT:
- Nick Shumate(BVNW), Brandon Budd(BVW), Kelvin Patterson(WSE)

Yet again, i just am curious about those questions and not asking them to be a smartypants. I really appreciate all the time and energy spent on the rankings!!

You bring up a few good points about 125. Cory Dreiling did lose to a wrestler that was previously ranked below him. He did beat Knox last year at 119 for the 3rd place medal, the day after Knox beat him 9-1 in the quarterfinals. As far as rankings goes, I know that in 5A some of these things will be worked out in the next couple of weeks because of the Newton tournament. I would imagine the same goes for 4A with the Bobcat Classic. Rest assured, the rankers would like to be right but the nice thing about us being wrong sometimes is kids reach their potential, sometimes a potential that their coach knows about but somehow forget to inform us.

Nonfish(clayjig, JV)-
That puzzles me if coach rios turned it in, then why isnt kenny ranked? 135 is sparse and he definitely qualifies in the top 6.

Coach Lane-
Who was the wrestler to beat Dreiling that was previously ranked below him?

Also this questioned wasnt answered. If a wrestler's coach has not turned in his team rankings sheet, can YOU as a ranker rank him anyways on ur good judgement and opinion? Is this practice frowned upon and do u fanatically always need a team's ranking sheet to rank a kid?

Those 6A rankings have been completed but just not posted yet. All three of the individuals you mentioned were ranked. Munyan - 3th @ 119, Aubrey - 4th @ 135, and Patterson - 3rd @ 140. Hope this helps.

4A rankings are completed with the exception of 189 & 215 where there are only five kids per weight that have been ranked. These are generally updated on the weekends after I sift through tournament results and check e-mails from coaches. With the holiday break, there has been virtually no movement and I probably won't give it another thought until after the tournaments that take place this weekend.

Someone asked whether or not personal opinion goes into these rankings? Well of course they do. This is not like the AP where coaches submit a ballot sheet each week and then we just compile the points. Usually a kid winds up getting ranked because a coach from another school saw this kid wrestle and then says, "Coach, so-and-so at 130 lbs. looked tough last week and beat so-and-so, I would rank him two or three behind so-and so." Team scores are the same way. Scott City wasn't in the preseason top ten, but after how they started the season some coaches e-mailed me to recommend them as solid top five team, so I agreed and moved them up. It was not a case of Coach Lippelman calling me and saying, "Rank my team, or I will throw one of my patened Beaver cradles on you."

My experience is that most coaches and most wrestlers could care less about where they are ranked. They know that what is important is to improve each week so that they can determine their own ranking at the end of the season. Rankings don't help you in seeding meetings. They won't get you a scholarship. They certainly won't get you a state medal. What they are is a nice recognition of a school's accomplishment. What gets you good seeds and what gets you scholarship money and what gets you that state medal is mopping the map with your opponent every time you step out there, wrestling with pride, showing good sportmanship, those type of things.

The rankers do take a good deal of personal time to compile the rankings, but if you think I spend hours a day searching the web for the rosters of all the 4A schools in the state - - sorry. I realize that there are some kids at the wrong weights, which is fine. After certification, they will be adjusted to reflect what weight the top wrestlers in the state are certified at.

Personally, I like to do the rankings, because I had a higher percentage of accuracy last year, which I am sure hurt both Coach Lane and Coach LaMar's feelings especially since it was my first year. You can be assured that all rankers will use as much information as possible to get the rankings accurate (which, of course, they never will be.)

Unitl that time, just keep mopping the mat and as a great wrestler and coach from Iowa once said, "Make your own luck."

Look at the very bottom of all the rankings. Some people don't have their weight or some other criteria filled in, so they don't appear in the right place. I'm not sure if that's true for 145 or not, but there are people ranked way down at the very bottom that you'd otherwise miss.
