Go back to the jungle because you know nothing. I personally have seen the K.C. Turner team wrestle and I believe they may be a legitimate top 5 team. Since I am the 5A ranker I put them in #2 behind Bishop Carroll who placed ahead of them at the Chanute Tournament. I have seen the best teams in 5A. I have seen most of the teams in the top 10. Your opinion, if we can call it that, has no merit.

I don't know anything I know every year we went to state KC kids had good records and they didn't do anything besides a select few and same last year they go in with good records because the competition they wrestle not much else you can really say than that And the ranks in the wichita eagle today were really poor look forward to seeing how they end up in state in that order.

the great one is dumb and he probably never passed 3rd grade because he is using a lot of run on sentences and then he misspells more words than my cousin who is 5 and i doubt that he has seen turner wrestle but if he had i would bet he would change his tune because turner is really good and i don't know how any intelligent person can make a post like this so i am going to stop.

Phew, that was even annoying to write.

Hey Great One,
I understand where your coming from. Alot of Kansas City area wrestlers compile a respectable record throughout the year, only to be crushed at state. Although a few exceptions have turned an eye or two, most people think of KCK wrestlers as weak. Turner has always had a few studs. Back in the 88-92 seasons, Turner had quite a few bangers.
This year is different. They are strong all over the place and have proven it all season long. Wyandotte Co. has rarely put a scare in wrestlers throughout our state. Wyandotte High had a great run in the early 90's under Bob Brown. Other than that, KCK has been a minimal talent. Until a guy can come in and get a hardcore kids system going, it will remain the same for years to come.

I think that the reason for the good records/bad performances at state is due to lack of competition throughout the season. As 31THs said, there are a few exceptions. However, I think that the above-average KC schools beat up on the lower-tier KC schools without ever venturing out past Topeka for some really tough tournaments. It would be interesting to see how some of these schools would do if more of them came to Newton, Beloit, et cetera.

For example, last year in the first round of state, our forum freedom fighter Prant Garker wrestled a regional champ from KC. His record seemed impressive (28-3 I think), while Prant was sitting at a cool 18-16. It is common knowledge that Prant's wrestling abilities do not quite match up with his posting wit. However, Prant wrestled him to a very close match (3-2, I believe) which could have easily gone either way. I guess my point is that their decievingly good records could be a result of inferior competition during their regular season.

Regarding Turner--
Turner is a **** good team this year, and the great one should have re-worded his opinion. I would bet that Lent Brane knows a little more about 5a competition than The_Great_One. However, I don't think that anyone's opinions should ever be called "without merit." That is why they are called "opinions."

Congrats, Aquinas!
Great job, Hat Town!

Well as a former wrestler and now coach of Schlagle High School, I would have to say that most of the comments on the forum are true over the last few years. I wrestled at Schlagle from 1995-1999. In 1995 Schlagle qualified 7 out of 7 wrestlers and placed 10th in the state. Not bad for a basketball school. Over that time we had a wrestler on our team named John Davis who was a 2 time state runner up to Bo Maynes and won state his senior. We were legit wrestlers we went to hard tournaments including the Chanute tournament where John nearly defeated Zach Roberson but lost 1-0 (it was alot closer than that u just had to see). This was Turner's first year going to Chanute, I know up until this season we have been going to Chanute for 10-15 years.

In fact Chanute would drive up and attend the Schlalge Invitational (which was actually a pretty good tournament) then at the end out January we would go down to SEK which rotates from Chanute and Coffeyville.

Those were the days.... but they are gone. New administration meant the lost of our very own tournament (Schlagle Invitational) a tournament that we host for nearly 20 years. Just this year when we got our team schedule we noted that the Chanute tournament was cut because of budget reasons. Don't think that we just choose to go to local tournaments!!!

I must admit that KCK wrestling is poor right now. BUT realize that there are alot of other factors that play a big role in that. Don't complain about the people who are workin hard to change that.

I for one have been working very hard to change wrestling in my city. I have been coaching a middle school team for 5 years now and when I started the team consisted of 6 wrestlers (there are 18 weight classes) this year the same team had 57 wrestlers. I have founded a kids club that has been around for 5 years now. The kids have produced some of the athletes I have at Schlagle and some at Washington High School.
The school Boundaries in KCK really divides up the talent pool and kids I have working together in kids club all go to different school. School district like Turner doesn’t have that problem. Most of the Turner kids already know how to wrestle before they attend high school. Not the case at Schlagle.. I have to spend the first few days on stance movement double legs etc…

So just keep in mind that there are also a lot of other factors that play along with the success of a program.

1997 - (5A) George, Daniel [Wyandotte] (103 lb. dec. 8-1)
1998 - (5A) Allen, Mandell [Wyandotte] (112 lb. dec. 10-7)
1998 - (5A) Chaney, Charles [Wyandotte] (215 lb. Fall 0:55)

1991 - (5A) Koenig, Joel [Sumner] (275 lb.)
1992 - (5A) Speiss, Brandon [Sumner] (171 lb. dec. 7-3)
1997 - (5A) Jackson, Marques [Sumner] (152 lb. dec. 3-2)

1990 - (5A) Hodges, Aaron [Harmon] (160 lb. )
1991 - (5A) Hodges, Aaron [Harmon] (171 lb. )
1994 - (6A) Patch, Kyle [Harmon] (119 lb. dec. 3-1)
1994 - (6A) Cox, Jaudon [Harmon] (130 lb. dec. 4-2)
1999 - (5A) Frazier, Ryan [Harmon] (275 lb. dec. 1-1 (OT - Criteria))
2002 – (5A) Kevin Pulliam, Harmon 275 lbs

1992 - (5A) Stean, Jeff [Bonner Springs] (275 lb. dec. 3-2)
1992 - (5A) Thompson, Brian [Bonner Springs] (135 lb. dec. 2-1)

2001 - (5A) Vogel, Jimmy [Bonner Springs] (130 lb. Major dec. 12-4)

1996 - (5A) Simma, Chad [Turner] (189 lb. Fall 3:07)
2001 - (5A) Steinmetz, Mike [KC Turner] (152 lb. dec. 7-4)

2003 – (5A) George Roath, Washington (140)

Now for a reality check TURNER has an outstanding team and proved it on the mat last weekend as they out classed most of there opposition. But there was a time not long ago where TURNER could have been labled the worst school in Wyandotte County. This is a true testiment of the hard work put in by the Turner program and the outcome of it. But i can also assure u all KCK coaches are working hard at finding ways to turn all our programs around. We have a very strong interest in producing talented kids no matter what area school they attend. So yes most KCK schools are having down years but time says that nobody stays at the top or bottom for ever andwithin a few short years u will see a definate turn around.
