After this weekend there are a few more parents and several more wrestlers that want to be affiliated with the Wizzers of Oz, we are looking at the singlet for pre season, and after season members. The following will give another indication of how our Kansas Wrestlers did this weekend going against some of the best high school kids in the country.

By the way, congrats Curtis for your weekend. A lot more can be said, but the Swayz and Furches traveling stories can continue. This trip was great because there are so many others who can share in the joy. If you ever wanted a 24 hour wrestling marathon, this was your chance.

Not going to take a ton of space here, but what a weekend for the Kansas Wizzers of Oz. We had a great weekend and for those not going, you missed out on an incredible weekend of wrestling. Parents who were a huge help were the The Downs, Mr. Fausset, Mr. Detmer, and of course my wife. Without these folks helping out we couldn’t have had the weekend we had.

Left Derby yesterday around 12:30, arrived in Tulsa at 4:30 after taking a brief stop over at my house in Oologah. Made weigh in with no problems, and ate at Wendy’s across the street. Regarding the facility, it was the nicest High School Facility I have ever been in, remarkable. Wrestling started promptly at 7:00 PM and we were done with our last match at 11:30 PM. We ended up with 15 wrestlers in 2 Divisions placing 12 of them with 7 firsts place. Not bad if you ask me. Got to Skiatook where we had a great family host us in a mountain top 4,000+ square foot house. We got to bed around 1:00 AM, woke up at 6:00 AM and went to leave, had a flat tire, and had one car where the starter was bad. The family we stayed with let us use one of their cars to get everyone to weigh in on time. This family was unreal, they had breakfast for everyone, plus a cooler full of Gatorade for everyone.

We arrived at Broken Aarow at 7:55 AM, weighed in, again no trouble, and got ready to wrestle at 9:00 AM. This tournament featured High School wrestling teams from all over Texas, Missouri, and of course Oklahoma including, Broken Arrow, Catoosa, Union, Stillwell, Jenks and I could go on and on. These teams were all there as teams and coached by their high school coaches. I won’t go into a ton of detail other than to say, that by the end of the tournament a number of coaches were commenting on the quality of our Kansas team. This tournament was done by 4:30 PM, take photo’s load up and head out. Some wrestlers got to go 2 divisions at each tournament, essentially 2 tournaments because of their age, while others only got to go 1 division at each tournament. I think everyone was ready to take the Kansas Wizzers of Oz team out again. It was great knowing that Oklahoma wrestlers and coaches were talking about how good Kansas wrestling was by the end of each tournament. Each wrestler and their record in less than a 24 hour period was like this.

Tyler Downs: 11–1, 11 pins, 1st–3X, 2nd–1X
Jonathan Dukes: 6–1, 4 pins, 3rd-1X, 1st-1X
Eric Horton: 3–4, 2 pins, DNP
Kyle Detmer: 13-1, 10 pins, 1st-3X, 2nd-1X
Garret Fausset: 10-5, 5 pins, 4th-2X
James Fox: 6-1, 0 pins, 2nd 1X, 1st 1X
Joey Stephens: 4-0, 3 pins, 1st 1X (did not wrestle 2nd day)
Brandon Marlatt: 7-8, 2 pins, DNP
Nathan Furches: 16-1, 14 pins, 1st-3X, 2nd-1X
Charlie Wagner: 3-3, 0 pins, 2nd 1X

First of all, I wanted to thank Mike and Mary Jane for a GREAT weekend. Without their efforts this fun weekend would not have happened. The group of kids and families that went was as fun a group that we've wrestled with. We felt we have gained some great friends from around the Wichita area and Kansas.
The level of competition from top to bottom was as good as we have ever faced and the team from Kansas was hot and heavy right in the middle of it. I was so proud of the kids, they keep bring it to the mat and made a fantastic showing. As Mike had mentioned, the coaches & wrestlers were noticing the quality of wrestling from team Kansas. The kids made a statement about the level of competition in Kansas.
The people that put on the tournaments were great host and put together some super competition. I would give the Catoosa group the edge on how smooth the tournament ran & the Broken Arrow the edge on the coaches’ hospitality room, it was unbelievable. Both Hosts put on a quality event & we will always remember their generosity. My Thanks go out to both of them for a job well done.
For those that went with Team Kansas, we had a great time and look forward to seeing every one down the road. Good luck to everyone. For those that didn’t go, you missed out on a great time.

My Thanks again to Mike & Mary Jane.

Hey Rob, you had time to go to the hospitality room? Honest as all get out, I think I spent a total of about 5 minutes over 2 days in the room. I did get some of those wings though. I'd normally run in, grab a bottle of water and run out. Our team was so good, and always seemed to have someone up wrestling. As a result, we didn't have hardly any time to get into one of the fun parts about Oklahoma, Hospitality rooms that put out food like Grandma's kitchen. We did get both cars home, and yesterday, Nathan and Brandon were so sore they could hardly get up and down during church, then again, one had 17 matches in less than 24 hours and the other had 15. To the parents of the young men who went. You have raised well mannered, wonderful young men. There was not a single incident or problem and it was an honor to help coach them and see them wrestle this weekend.

Mike you said it...what a great weekend!

Some of you missed out on “a weekend in the meat grinder” (a Bailey quote).

Our “young men” were soo impressive. And I got to know some really great people: all of our wrestlers, the Downs, Mr. Detmer, the Furches, and our hosts at Skiatook. Thanks soo much to you all.

We collected some good stories for the next camp fire ... and had an incredible experience! Garret will long remember his Bailey matches (and others like Skates too) ... he pushed himself passed his natural limits and learned a lot about his real character, his regional competition, and his own readiness.

Yep, Garret wants a Kansas Wizzers of Oz team singlet…great idea, design, and camaraderie… just tell me when and where to send the money!

I can only IMAGINE how the boys felt. Shoot! I am still stumblin and cryin (without wrestling a single match). Garret was a zombie all day Sunday. Then all of a sudden he came alive just before we got home, and just as quickly, he decided to go to Eric’s 6:30 practice.

Okay, I’m guilty too. I visited the hospitality room - often. Our hosts had no idea just how hospitable they were to our fine young men and their stomachs...LOL

Enlightening: It really is sad that Kansas leadership can't support our kids and coaches the way other states do, "all there as teams and coached by their high school coaches".

And we echo Rob’s sentiments: For those that went with Team Kansas, if you’re in my neighborhood and you need a place to crash - just holler.

We look forward to seeing you down the road. Good luck to everyone!

Trying to upload photos by the end of the night, early tomorrow, Anyone having photo's would appreciate you emailing them to me if you can. The team photo really didn't come out well. Will hopefully have some of the video's uploaded for everyone to watch before long from the Catoosa tourney.

Gotta give it up really to Darin and the folks down at Sunflower. I have emailed to ask about posting a photo of it when it is ready.
