Now I personally am not a big fan of basketball. But, after supporting my team (Buhler) in one of the rounds of sub-state basketball tournament ,I noticed that a team they were playing had a record of 1-18 (now 1-19). That team was Clay Center who's wrestling team obviously won 4A state. How many other instances this year has a school had an awesome wrestling team but their basketball team blows. This will probably be the case in mainly smaller schools but its just a thought. Do the basketball teams suffer because the studs go to wrestling? Do the wrestling teams suffer because the boys flee to the courts?

My sophomore year, our (Hutch's) wrestling team won 6a state. That same year, our basketball team was coming off of an undefeated season, ending in a state championship. They, the basketball team, didn't win state that year, but they did get second. My junior year, the wrestling team won state again, and the basketball team had only a mediocre season. The next season, both teams have a mediocre year.
This could show that among the larger schools, the less any one team would suffer because of athletes flocking to a different activity.

Heck in 2003 when Abilene won state, the boys basketball team won like 2 games.

In 2003- Norton's Basketball team won State. Their wrestling team took 2nd to Hoxie at State. The only game the Football team lost was in the playoffs to Conway Springs, by 7 points, which was by far the closes game Conway had all year.
Not too bad for only having about 125 boys in the High School!
Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn- and most do.

Yeah, Wakeeney was good this year in basketball, but just think if Knapp's ego wasn't as big as he is, and you had a "coach" besides the postmaster, they would've won state.

St. Francis hasn't had a winning basketball team since 1997. And that was the only time in school history that St. Francis a basketball team made it past sub-state. Same year that they won their second straight state championship in wrestling.
Quinter is in the NWKL. Last year they were undefeated in Basketball and only had about 6 guys out for wrestling. Their last 3 coaches have been Ex-St. Francis wrestlers going to school in either colby or hays. Names like Kelley Gable, Gabe Jenkins, Tyler Lampe, and right now their head coach is Kyle Buffington. He's a freshman at Fort Hays

As a coach you want as much support for your team as you can get. I trully believe that in high school all kids should attend events after school such as basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, track and be a supporter if they are not a participant. I have noticed however, that my wrestling team as well as us coaches attend a lot more events than other coaches. For instance, our team will go to basketball games yet, I have never seen a basketball coach at a wrestling event. If it's to support the kids, why is there not more cross-athletic participation. If you want support, I believe you have to give support. Is anyone else having this problem?

mchurch, you bring up a good point. While my teammates and I try to make it to basketball games as often as possible, most other students do not attend wrestling tournaments, even if they are near town. Our girls basketball team just won sub-state, and the school is dismissing students at 1:30 on Thursday, and allowing students to ride a pep bus to salina to cheer on the Lady Chieftains. But no such allowances were put in place when we went to State wrestling. I realize that wrestling is not as popular as basketball in eastern Kansas, but a little more support would be appreciated. Agreed?

A little more support...Ha! In some of my classes at Buhler the teachers are talking about working hard Monday and Tuesday so that way the basketball players wouldn't have to do any extra thinking before the state tournament games. I recall a few weeks ago when my teammates and I left for the state tournament and our teachers were left wondering where the hell we went. The basketball players were forced to go to our final Senior Dual but all I heard was complaining for the next week. Basketball and BTK take away wrestling media.

Our teachers knew we were going and got mad b/c we were missing school??? and yea we all try about 25 kids on the wrestling team go to basketball games to show our support and root on the 2-19 girls and 1-20 guys (yea they always get in fights w/ us saying how good they are?) the dual record for us was 10-2 and Co-League champions for the 2nd year running, they haven't even held a league anything for at least 5 years, and yea none of them show up to our duals, even our Senior recognition night not any of them or the coaches showed up except for the b-ball players that had a bf wrestling, although there were a few teachers there nothing like what i'm sure most schools have, we have nice backing from the parents though, no one else, but the Principal was a wrestler and had sons that wrestled so he helps us out ....but yes BTK took away from 4,5,6A State in Witchita this year....whatta shame

Basketball in Chapman for the guys is usually around .500, the girls this year were like 19-3 but lost in the 2nd round to Buhler (go figure) our wrestling team ranks in the top 1/3rd of 4a on most years usually in the high teens low 20s.

It must really suck to lose to Buhler being from Chapman Aaron. Does Chapman have a local boxing team like golden gloves or anything?
