So your saying that Stewart, Chadwick, Payne, Steinmetz and Baylor aren't stand out wrestlers. That is a joke.

Considering Chadwick and Steinmetz did not win it I think you answered your own question. Baylor is average at best and Clark from Wellington is a scrapper with poor technique and he won it. When you look at all the weights from top to bottom they are weak. 4A was particularly weak once you got above 145, which is unusual because it is usually the toughest class from top to bottom.

Maybe you ought to rethink what you said about 160 being weak. Especially in 5A and 6A, I think it was a pretty tough weight. Stewart, I believe, is a 4-time medallist. I helped coach him a couple summers ago at Cadet Nationals - he was pretty close to making All-American that summer. Jonathan Walter was also on that Cadet team, and he's another solid wrestler. Those two were the champ and runner-up, respectively, in 6A. As far as 5A goes, the finalists are young, but excellent, wrestlers. Steinmetz brings in several Kids wrestling honors as well as a state championship last year at 152 lbs. Payne also has several Kids honors to his name, and took 4th last year at 152. Even though both of them are sophomores this year, they are still far from "weak."

Once again you are making my point. When you can only list a few names in all classes I would not consider that to be a strong class.

Perhaps I can only name a few wrestlers who have extensive credentials, but there are many good wrestlers in the 160 lb. class.

In 4A, there was:

Jon Hausserman of Norton - 32-0 going into state, took 3rd.
Aaron Pratt of Spring Hill - a two-time state medallist and wrestled a style all his own.
Troy Medill of Lansing - undefeated until the finals, also wrestled at Junior Nationals and made a run at All-American status in Greco-Roman.
Derek Corral of Clay Center - a decent wrestler from an excellent program
Adam Halford of Baldwin - spent several weeks last summer touring Central America and wrestling with some top-level wrestlers

In 5A, there was:

Nathan Payne of Paola and Mike Steinmetz of Turner
Adam Monks of Blue Valley - took 4th at state, wrestled well at the Cadet National Duals, and was a solid member of the Cadet National team at Fargo
Phil Hart of Shawnee Heights - took 3rd at state, transferred in from a school in Missouri

In 6A, there was:
Brett Stewart of Junction City (2nd in 01) and Jonathan Walter (4th in 01) of Manhattan
Josh Johnston of Leavenworth - 3rd at state, member of the junior national team
BL Chadwick of Wichita West - 4th at state, 3rd in 01
Matt Wintz of Derby - 5th in state, 4th in 01
Paul Lappin of Garden City - 6th in state, member of the cadet national team
Nick McGovern of Lawrence Free State - 5th in 00

And I don't know much about 321A, but I can recognize several good wrestlers:
Brandon Sommer of Prairie View - 4th in state
Jake Gardner of Lincoln - state champ, 2nd in 01
Jake Schenk of Smith Center - 2nd in state, runner-up in 01
Blake Pilkington of Oakley - 3rd in state, champ in 01
Jeremiah Wiley - 5th in state, 5th in 01

That's only a handful of wrestlers from each class. All I'm trying to say is that it was not a weak class. There were some young men in there with some pretty respectable resumes, and there are also many, many good wrestlers who just don't have the background. I hate to hear people call a certain weight weak - especially across all classes. That detracts from everything they've strode for all year - it takes away from the guys who worked to win state, medal at state, qualify, or even place at a tournament.

After HIGH SCHOOL STATE, KIDS FEDERATED STATE, METRO CLASSIC, AND EAST-WEST CLASSIC, here are my final thoughts on who where this year's best wrestlers at each weight.

103: Jake Kriegbaum - By far the most dominant wrestler at this weak weight.

112: Jake Gardner, Cody Garcia - Both very, very good wrestlers, but I'd pry give the advantage to Gardner, but this might change in the next couple of years.

119: Carbonneau - was reluctanct to choose Carbonneau, but he gave Hoover a heck of a match at the E-W Classic, so he earned my respect.

125: Doug Hoover - with only 3 losses in career, he's far and away the best at this weight.

130: Emery McReynolds - very dominant all year, and at E-W Classic he proved how good he was.

135: Bogart, Luke Wise - No body had heard of Wise all year, but he dropped alot of weight, and was very dominant at this weight, and he even pinned his E-W Classic opponent showing he could handle any pressure.

140: Drennon, Pyle, Johnson, Dugan - I think these four are far and away the best, and I think they make up the best weight class in the state. I think if you wreslted these 4 in a round robin, the result would be different every time.

145: Vogel - Proved he was the best when he M-Dec. Nick Chrisman at the E-W Classic. And for you Dukes fans, Gentry showed you.

152: Gentry - This was a competitive class, but not terribly strong.

160: Jake Gardner, Johnathon Walter - Very good match at the E-W Classic. Gardner has only lost about 2 matches in the last two years, and he is very big for his weight.

171: Gabe Conaghan, Josh Pruitt - I thought Pruitt was the best all year long, and he helped me out when he pinned his E-W Classic opponent with ease. Conaghan is very dominant as well.

189: Jutin Dyer - Beat everybody good. He was far and away the most dominant wrestler in this weight class all year long. Next year I think it'll be Jake Strait, but this year the nod goes to Dyer.

215: Seiler - All year long I thought the best was TJ Staab. I think TJ can beat Seiler, but from what I saw from the E-W Classic, Dyer isn't to be taken lightly, and I think he is the best right now.

275: Ubben - Nobody has really touched him the last 3 years. Pulliam gave him a hell of a match, but Ubben won like always. I thought Venegas might be the best, but when Jason Duffy beat him at kids state, I knew it was Ubben.

If you think otherwise, please tell me. EXCEPT FOR ALL YOU DUKES FANS. HE IS NOT AS GOOD AS YOU ALL BRAG HIM UP TO BE.

How could you chose Carbonneau over Metzler? I watched their match at Newton and luke beat him pretty good.

At 112, it's Tanner Gardner, not Jake Gardner. And i'm pretty sure that Gardner and Garcia wrestled at freestyle state last year in a exibition match(Gardner was at 103.5 and Garcia at 112) and i think Gardner won. Nevertheless, they are both great wrestlers and have bright futures ahead of them. I'm sure they'll get to wrestle this summer

At 160 how can u say that walters or gardner are the best?? When Brett Stewart beat walers either 4 or 5 times, and walter's pretty much handled gardner.

103 - D. Schwartz (3rd at nationals)
112 - T. Gardner (Unbeatable)
119 - L. Metzler (want to see him and T. Charboneau in best out of 3)
125 - D. Hoover (4 times, All-American)
130 - ?? (too many evenly matched fellas)
135 - S. Bogart/N. Allison (toss up)
140 - S. Drennan (want to see him and M. Pyle again,
but both guys are on another level compared to the rest of the 140 class)
145 - J. Vogel (3rd at nationals, the bigger the opponent the harder he crushes them e.g. N. Chrisman)
152 - K. Brown
160 - B. Stewart (played baseball instead of going to nationals )
171 - G. Conaghan (no contest)
189 - J. Dyer (again no contest)
215 - J. Carrol (best of the Kansas 215 crowd at nationals, and I garuntee he would beat Hemmerling 9/10 times)
275 - Ubben (Big, Mean, All-American)

Johnson from Norton will state next year and be undefeated whether he's in 321A or 4A. No doubt in my mind.
