Do any of you receive extra money (aside from your supplemental salary) for time spent on Saturdays during wrestling season.? If so, how is it figured? What do other coaches of other sports feel about it? Any other helpful info?

Isn't that what the supplemental is for?

I am not a coach but a school board member. Yes, that is what the supplemental is for, but if you compare the supplement to what basketball, football, volleyball etc.. get per hour, wrestling coaches easily get less per hour. Basketball coaches practice after school and have games on tuesday and friday. Wrestling coaches have the same after school hours, plus time before school checking weights and hours every saturday (almost) for three months. I think Brent wants to know if there is any method of compensating for this time, and our school does not have a method to do so. I am not aware of any that do. Wrestling coaches even more so than other coaches are not in it for the money.

I will not bore you with my credentials in this area, but suffice it to say that I am fully aware of the time commitment involved with wrestling and am also fully aware of the dedication most wrestling coaches have for their sport. The Saturday thing is a good point, but lets not lose sight of the fact that the point system now used in Kansas has moved wrestling to that kind of schedule. Not too many years ago (as recently as the season of 92-93, I believe) a Kansas high school wrestler was "limited" to four tournaments per year (not counting KSHSAA tournaments) which automatically limited the number of Saturdays being consumed for coaches AND athletes and placed greater emphasis on week night dual matches. The decline of full teams led to the demise of dual matches but it was also IN LARGE PART the coaches themselves who led the charge to convince the KSHSAA to depart from days of competition and go to points--thereby giving wrestlers the "opportunity" to wrestle more matches in a year by reducing the number of week night duals and "loading up" on tournaments (Saturdays) where the number of matches wrestled per points of competition is greater. In the past ten years we have gone from twenty matches being a lot of mat time in a season to where now 40+ matches in a season is commonplace. This parallels the increase in Saturday schedules. And what about the A.D.s and/or principals and the occassional superintendent who are now present at BB and wrestling matches 3-4 nights out of five and at wrestling touraments on Saturdays from December until March. Should we pay them more as well?

I've always looked at it that Saturdays are just part of what we get paid for in the first place. Egg is absolutely right in that duals have become less important and we coaches are the ones who decided that. Whether its four tournaments or 10, it's just part of the fun of being a wrestling coach!
I guess I always look at my "supplimental pay" as being the free food in the hospitality room. By the way, Onaga still has the best food.

Why do some coaches complain about not getting paid for long Saturdays? One would think that the supplemental salary and the opportunity to coach high school wrestlers would be enough. If getting out of work early is such a high priority, perhaps coaching a basketball team would be an explorable option.

I think supplemental is an extremely crazy word, and should be taken out of the dictionary.
