Id have to say that Eastern kansas wrestling is the toughest.

okay must we start this battle again? and if we must, please tell me how many parts this will consist of and where the boundary lines will be?

if i may set a few to start a topic on, let's divide the state into 4 sections, northwest, southwest, northest, southeast.....then from there the dividing lines will be US highway 281, and Kansas Highway 96, as if it ran across the state continually in a horizontal manner.

So my choice for the toughest part of the state in order is:

1. Northwest- based on history and tradition the schools have, ie. St. Francis and Oberlin, holding the most state champions of any schools, as well as returning 321A state champ Norton.

2. Southeast- just because it includes many of the wichita schools, ie. Haysville-Campus and Bishop-Caroll.

3. Southwest- schools like Ulysses and Scott City, what else needs to be said, Ulysses is always tough and Scott City defending 4A state champs.

4. Northest, although producing quality schools such as Abiliene, Minneapolis, Chapman, and Clay Center, it is considerably weaker the farther northeast you get due to lack of 6A &5A schools and very weak 321 schools, so it has earned the last spot. Although containing 5A champs, KC-Turner, it says not too much due to the weakness of 5A.

these are my personal opinions and this is a topic of strongest region, not class, so lets keep to what it's about

Look I don't want to get into a big thing about classes being tougher than one another, but it was said best by either Prant Garker, or Jhris Cennings. Bishop Carrol who placed 3rd at 5A state beat Manatten the 6A state champions. And Manatten the 6A state champs had earlier in the season beat KC-Tuner the 5A state champs. So i don't really think that you can say one class is so much tougher than another.

I've always been partial to the Flint Hills ..... but I also enjoy the drive from Newton to Emporia on HWY 50, the stretch from Holton to Tonganoxie on 16, and I-70 west of Salina (just love farmland)..... nice view from Coronado Heights ..... have also enjoyed many of Kansas' man-made lakes ...... those are just off the top of my head ..... so I'd have to say that the best part of Kansas is wherever you happen to be.

Good call on the flint hills. the worst would have to be the drive eastward from Washington to Hiawatha on highway 36. There is no good radio stations up there.

Chewie, I was born in Hiawatha .... and I'm with ya' on the lack of good radio stations in that area ..... I was excited when I first saw Mr. Salyer's post with the state agricultural divisions ..... I thought we were getting back to the original question which asked what part of Kansas was the best! ..... since we have people from all over Kansas on the forum, I thought this would be a good topic for an informative (albeit somewhat subjective) discussion ..... I've always been interested in astronomy and really appreciate the clarity of the night sky in parts of rural Kansas .... also best areas for massive keggers ..... Froemans Field in Harvey county was always a favorite venue for that and there used to be another good spot between Solomon and Abilene that I barely remember.

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measured up the state geographicly, split at hwy. 183 and 77. I didin't have time to do the east and central, but the west is pretty easy to count up because there are so few towns there.
I figured that I would just count for the last 15 years because the ancient history part of state records does not seem to have much affect on how things are now, as it would appear that the west is weakening somewhat. this is what I came up with, and I may not be totally accurate on the no. of 321 a schools.
6a: west has 2 of the 32 schools, 6.25%. in the last 15 years, took 6 titles, or 40% of the titles, but in the last 5 years, took 0, or 0%.
doesn't really show anything except that Dodge and Garden didn't win a title in the last 5 years.

5A:west has 2 schools, 6.5 % of the total 5a schools, 0 titles in the last 15 years, which shows that hays high and Liberal have been extremely consistent during this period.

4A west has 6 4A schools, 9.2% of the total 4A schools. won 6.5 titles (tie in 96 bet. Ulysses and Columbus) or 43% of the titles. in the last 5 years, took 3 titles, or 60%.

321 A: west has 18 321A schools that I counted,
or 27.6% of the total schools shown entered at the state tournament in 2004. There were more than that if you count the teams that were represented at their substate and were eliminated there, but I won't count them. West took 13 of the last 15 titles here, or 86.7%,
in the last 5 years, took 3 of the titles or 60%.

so, what this indicates is that there were 219 teams represented at the state in all 6 levels, (probably not quite that many as I am not sure that all 4 through 6 A teams have wrestling) and 28 are from the west. that is about 12.8 % of the total. in the last 15 years, they took 25.5 of the 60 available titles, or 42.5 %, and if one only considers the last 5 years of recent history, they have 6 of the 20 available titles, or 30%. so whether they are the best or not, they certainly are still winning much more than their share of the titles, especially when one considers the fact that they are so minimally represented in 5A and 6A. Richard will have to do Central, as there are way too many people there for me. One thing that is notable, though, the two largest population areas, the KC metro area, and the Wichita, area, COMBINED account for only 9 of the 60 15-year titles, and only 4 of the 5-year totals, and that is lumping Wellington in the Wichita and Paola in the KC metro areas. Not a very impressive stat for them, I wouldn't think. This of course does not reflect the countless world freestyle and greco titles no doubt won by that area.

That's cool, NOW Abilene and Clay Center (with combined 4 titles in last 7 years). and presently ranked #1 &2 in 4A. ARE BOTH NOW WESTERN KANSAS SCHOOLS.

I did not include them in the west-- i said they were the spoilers for the west, meaning they kept the west teams from getting more championships. I also did not note that Ark City was the most impressive single team by far during this period, they won over 11 titles during the 15 year period, far surpassing any performance by any other school. I will do so now, the best team is from the eastern 1/3 of the state. Satisfied?

I think its all good. I know its not possible but if State could be held under one roof 1A through 6A it would feature some great wrestling.

if this debate was taking place in person i would have to say that there is a lot of talking going on but very little being said....
