Yes, it was an absolute spankin'! Team Showme appeared bigger, stronger, quicker, better technicians, and for the first time in my memory the Showme's appeared in better condition.

I believe the gauntlet has been laid across our cheeks. And we in the Kansas wrestling community had better wake up and accept the challenge. From our coaches to our wrestlers, we need to improve.

By my quick calculations, Missouri scored 50 takedowns to our 5. That's right, the Showme's had 10 times more takedowns than we did. The confidence displayed by Missouri was truly amazing.

In the neutral position, Missouri took us to school; there is no other way to say it. Low Singles, Doubles, Knee Picks, it was a clinic. When we did shoot, we were snapped down in a front headlock and scored on.

I will not question our effort but we were “out-classed.” In the past, even when we lost, there were glimmers of hope. There were a couple of matches, that if they had gone the other way, the dual outcome would be different. But not this year … we were dang near skunked.

In the 12th Annual Metro Classic two records were set. Missouri set a record for the most points scored and Kansas set a record for the fewest points scored.

Bonner Springs, Matthew Middleton was very impressive in his major decision. Nathan Payne scored his victory with a last second takedown. But Nathan Payne from Paola would score the nights biggest victory, as the Wicina Award winner. The Wicina Wrestling Trophy is presented to the wrestler who displays exceptional qualities and the winner also receives a $1,000.00 scholarship.

I would like to take Missouri's Metro and put it up against our best overall Senior team. I didn't recognize a lot of names this year...maybe half the team (guess I just missed hearing these guys names at state)

7-50? man...sounds like my wrestling record

Yes, it was a truely sad sight. I noticed that they were awfully quick on there feet, freaking huge, and in solid shape. The kid that Elsrode wrestled looked like a 140lber. He was a freak of nature at that weight.

Do they weigh-in for this event, because I thought there was a definite size difference too in most classes? A number of them were taller but they did not appeared to any thinner either.

Randy, you brought up some interesting points. Missouri definitely beat us on their feet. Is this just a one year aberration or is it going to be a trend for a while? I read in another thread that Cody Bell said we might have been a little out of condition, since we only practiced twice. Is that normal in preparing for this event? That does not seem to be enough practices to me.

Also Randy I am interested in what you and others might think that we need to do on this side of the State line to narrow the gap (if this is more than a one year difference). I am a little concerned now that Kevin Klemm is no longer in the area, because I know many champions were developed from his program.

Do you think that they are currently a little more serious on the Missouri side of the metropolitan area about wrestling? The reason I ask that is from my own experience which is limited to Kids wrestling. I see they have this youth team the Competitors that is very good and takes it very seriously. They travel a lot to compete at national kids events. I have my son enrolled in Purler Wrestling Academy runned by Tony Purler a former NCAA Division I champion. It is expensive but I would say that about 90% of the kids are from Missouri. His year around weekly camps are all located on the Missouri side but the Rockhurst high school one is close to Kansas. I also think he would run a weekly Kansas site if he could work with an interested high school and coach. I am starting to see some of our Metro Kansas side kids clubs wrestle against more Missouri wrestlers at local meets. I think that will help. That Competitors club has been pretty dominant at those meets.

I think somehow too we need to start getting more Johnson County and Wyandotte County kids into the sport. We have some great football and track athletes in this area. I think a lot of these kids could also be great wrestlers. Does anyone else agree with this thought? I have been of the opinion for the last couple of years that there should be more athletes participating in the sport at the Kids level on the Kansas side of the Metro. If you agree with me on this why do you think they are not participating and what could be done to change that?

Need some help here. Not being from the KC area, I am assuming the Metro is based on only KC area kids. Not trying to make excuses, but excluding Turner, most of the teams that placed highly at state aren't from the metro area (please correct me if I'm wrong) STA and BVNW placed a distant 4th and 5th respectively in 6a and Blue Valley Stillwell placed 5th at 5a. Another good point would be to find out how many of those teams' seniors contributed to their point totals. I am wishfully thinking that perhaps this was a one time thing. Let's hope so for the sake of KS pride.

Booooty Whoopin !!! It's tough when they (Missouri) get done a week early and their coaches get together and organize some great practices. Plus, They usually come to the Kansas State Championships down in Wichita and scout the Kids. Its tough I coached the Metro many moons ago when they had Infraca and company. I don't feel so bad anymore.

Kansas has some good talent coming up in the next few years that would be eligible for the Metro. Good wrestlers are needed but it would be nice to let the coach's have a little more time to work with the kids than two practices. Why was the metro moved up a week any way I thought it was to be next week but got moved up for TV I didn't see no TV. Must a been a Missouri trick with Metro Sports. I don't ever see alot of Kansas wrestling on there what' up with that. Just kidding about the Missouri trick but what about the lack of Kansas wrestling on Metro Sports.

mawcoach:

There is a mileage area from the K. C. area which both sides of the border may draw from.

As the Missouri side of the border is more populous, the Kansas draw area is larger.

As stated, this is the 12th Annual Metro Classic. Here is a list of team winners:

1992 Missouri 30 Kansas 18
1994 Missouri 30 Kansas 24
1995 Kansas 39 Missouri 15
1996 Missouri 43 Kansas 18
1997 Missouri 39 Kansas 15
1998 Kansas 36 Missouri 19
1999 Missouri 37 Kansas 19
2000 Missouri 29 Kansas 27
2001 Kansas 32 Missouri 13
2002 Kansas 33 Missouri 19
2003 Missouri 39 Kansas 21

To qualify, you have to be a Metro area senior. The Metro is defined by roughly a 75-mile radius of KC. In the past, that has included Garnett, Ft. Scott, Effingham, and Sabetha on the Kansas side and Cameron, St. Joe, and Marysville on the Missouri side. The population base is substantially bigger on the Missouri side. But that is just an excuse and a poor one at that.

The wrestlers do have a weigh-in and get a 7-pound allowance.

Yes, Missouri does take this event and their wrestling serious.

I would like to give a few opinions and such, but right now, I’m really “in-the-dumps” and not in a very good frame of mind to be writing. But I will get over it!

P. Pitbull's Old Dog,

As I understood it the match was moved to a later date to allow for tv coverage but something about that date didn't work so they had to move it back to the original date of last night.

I took my 7 year old son to watch the Metro Classic this year because we enjoyed it on TV last year. I'm from MO and I was very disappointed. My 7 year old said, "KS didn't look very good at all and I bet they are mad."

My two cents is this, regardless of the time from State competition, it is up to the coaches and wrestlers on rather or not they want to take the event seriously. I hope that KS and MO learn from yesterday's disaster, You get what you put into it. If you only have 2 practices (KS or MO), you shouldn't expect anything different than what happened last night.

Metro Sports isn't showing the event on TV this year, they decided to sell VHS ($10) and DVD ($15). They choose the wrong year to try and make additional money from this event.

Would people still attend if it was moved back to give the Kansas' boys another week to prepare or do the wrestlers just want ot get it over with so they can grub and do nothing before freestyle. Bad thing is that Freestyle tournaments start up at the end of the month. For those that are serious There is no rest for the wicked and Missouri was wicked against Kansas last night!!!!!

... and I would like to point out ... that 321A ... was un-defeated!

It was a TEAM spanking, it had nothing to do with classifications.

Sorry, I am still in the dumps!

Is there a Missouri board somewhat like this? If so, could someone please post a link? I'd like to be a good sport and congratulate the Border Ruffians for their victory a few nights ago.

However, if I were a betting man, I would put money on Kansas placing higher at nationals.
