Have there been state champs in the past with bad or losing records?

Tommy Shaw from Derby had, I believe, 9 losses back in 93-94 when he won.

There was a Leitner kid from Atwood a few years ago that had double digit losses and got fourth at his regional and was a State Champ. I think he had been beaten by at least five or six of the people on the state bracket during the year. He was behind in his finals match and got put in a cradle, Leitner slipped his arm, forced the guy to his hip and boke the grip to put the kid he was wrestling on his back and got the pin. It was amazing. I guess that is why they wrestle it out at state and do not hand out the awards based on records, previous losses, and rankings!!

I'm not exactly sure what the deal is, but I remember Kelly Heinecker having at least 8 or 9 losses earlier this year. He's a defending state champ for crying out loud. That should show the true difference between 4a and 5/6a wrestling.

nick munoz from hutch had like 10-11 losses. thats quite a bit for a state champ. but hutch also goes to a lot of tough tournaments.

I saw Munoz get dominated last year at Rose Hill's tournament and he didn't look good at all. He won state in 6a where the competition is just not as tough. As for going to tough tounaments, a state champion should be able to handle the competition.

heincker has 10 losses because he is wrestling 112 now. Though he has great wrestling knowledge and skill he didn't get any stronger from last year and it is starting to catch up with him.

I believe a Keller from St. Francis was in the State finals (and got beat) in 1988. He had something like an 11 and 8 record.

Ark City has had several state champs with 9-12 losses. Most of these losses came in the state of Oklahoma which prepared them for an easy walk through a Kansas State Tournament.
