Wes Walker from Ulysses was as dominant as anyone his senior year. Never taken down by an opponent, Undefeated State Champ, High school All-American his senior year.

Scott Urban from Atwood was a former high school national champion back in the early 90's...and served as a an asst.coach at Chapman,ks for a while....there are a lot of guys you could make a case for..."4 timers...with exception on Derby's" for example!

Jake Durham, coaching legend from Norton, told me that the BEST high school wrestler he had seen during his coaching years was Stan Faulkender from St. Francis.
I think Henry Crosby from Garden City (the early, early 70's) has to be considered as one of the best high school wrestlers ever. He was an undefeated state champ in '71 and won the early version of the Senior National Tournament (it was called like "The Coache's Choice Tournament" or soemthing silly like that). He was recruited by Iowa and they sent him to a Juco in Iowa to work on grades and he tore up the comp there, but he got homesick and came back to GC where he played football at the local Juco, got a girl friend, started a family quit school, and is still at GC as far as I know.

Well if I had gotten one takedown he wouldnt have been lol. I wrestled Henry twice that year and he was darned tough and the strongest kid I have ever been on a mat with. He had incredible quickness and balance and was a great guy, I just wish I could have gotten that one takedown lol. Oh well, he was a good one though and I agree with Jake on Falkender big time.

Good questions...good wrestlers...here's my take. Understandably, the younger guys that are posting believe the guys that they have seen are the best. Probably not...history has not had enough time to properly evaluate them. Also, there was a point made earlier that a great high school career may not translate into a great college career, and there have been a few that may not have been that impressive until they matured a bit in college. Kansas has been very competitive at the High School national tournament. Any wrestler that placed there has to be considered as well representative of our state.
In what may have been the toughest weight class in any regional ever, in 1996 or 97 a 4A west regional had both Wes Walker of Ulysses and Alex Haines of Colby, both of which placed at High School Nationals at 215. Walker went on to be a NAIA champion at Missouri Valley. Walker gets my vote as most dominant big man in recent memory, followed closely by Boyle of Norton. Missing from the list would be Martin Segovia of Garden City, now coach of the Buffaloes, Steve Mesa of Garden City, and Britt Madison of Ulysses. The list goes on.

Temore used to get worked by ware all the time's they wrestled and he's the one that stopped him from being a four timer and don't forget bo maynes beat wares kid state record by one year because he wrestled one more year and ware was a senior national champ started for nebraska as a true freshman made it to nationals then he got beat out and quit so you never know how good he could of been I would have to say that he was better than doug hoover bradley of west who only won it once I believe, roberson maynes and others have the right to be on the list but some of these guys you guys are saying are just plain crazy.

Didn't Melvin Douglas wrestle in the Olympics? I know he was a World Champ, 2x NCAA champ, 3x state HS champ......I don't know anyone that matches the credetials of MELVIN DOUGLAS!!!! Only other to come close is Eric Akin. Maybe Roberson as he gets older and gets world level experience.

Once again, Pete Mehringer of Kinsley is #1 with Olympic Gold. Myron Roderick of Winfield should be #2. He was 4th in the Olympics under the old bracketing system with only one loss, a 1 point loss to Gold medalist Sashahara of Japan. Roderick was a 3x D1 Champ. Roderick could have easily wrestled in more Olympics and World games but was offered the OSU job and became the youngest coach in history male or female in any sport to win a D1 title as a head coach. Douglas is #3 with his World Title. Akin a world team member is #4. Yes that is my opinion, but it is based on fact.

I pretty much agree with WSEWC, except that I would reverse the #1 and #2 positions, as Mehringer's accomplishment is not accompanied by the extreme list of later accomplishments. It is very easy to become biased by discounting the abilities of those who are long gone, but I believe that it is a mistake to rate wrestlers such as Mr. Roberson, Akin, or Douglas above some of the proven past masters of the sport just because you never saw them wrestle or because of what they were able to accomplish at World or US levels. The fact is that Mr. Roderick is largely responsible for the creation of the US Wrestling Federation, and as its first coach, delivered it to the level that it is today. That later gave way to the USA wrestling venue that we have today, but before Mr. Roderick, an American was bucking a stacked deck in the international scene, Mr. Mehringer being a notable exception. One thing I am curious about-- does anyone have a link to the Olympic records to see how many opponents were entered in Mr. Mehringer's bracket? jsut curious.
