It should be required to run 3 mats for a tourney of this size at least for regionals. It works better for the wrestlers not to have to wait so long!NOT GOOD to still be waiting to wrestle at 11:45!!!

They only ran 2 mats at Lakin, everything went smooth and pretty sure they were 16 man brackets.

Must have been lots of pins at Lakin?I'm not saying it didn't go o.k. it was crowded and took too long Friday.MIDNIGHT is too late to be wrestling at a STATE QUALIFIING tounrey!START @9:00 a.m.instead of 2:00 p.m.

these were were 16 man brackets and i think the smallest one had 11 it was pitiful, and people teams were still there after midnight, i belive that if there arnt enough 321a gyms capable of running 3 mats in the region they should let some area 4A schools host it because being up that late and still having 5 rounds to wrestle the next day is hard on the wrestlers fans and officials

I have to say, I take offense to the implication that the regional tournament was not ran well. We have a group of people that work very hard around here to make sure the tournament runs with little or no problems. I understand your concern about running on two mats, and the fact that the gym was full of people. Had we have run another mat in our second gym people would have complained about that too. As I recall, besides running until about 11:30 friday night, the tournament run with no problems. So if your upset with the fact that we ran two mats that is fine, but do not complain that the tournament was run poorly, because it was not.

Friday Night was a little long, but the tournament didn't start until 11am on Saturday. 11AM!!! The P-burg tournament was one of the best run regional tournaments I've been a part of. As a broadcaster, I can tell you it was excellent. The table workers had team scores after every half round. Everyone was easy to work with and we were out of the building before 8pm on Saturday. Kudos to Coach Fuller and staff!

The P-burg regional was run very good--those of you have never run a tournament of this magnitude have no concept of the time and attention it takes.
Also, many people seem to forget that three mats have been "in vogue" only since the early to mid '90's. My school hosted a regional in '95 and we used two mats; when we hosted again in '99 we went to three mats.
Another factor to consider--the P-Burg regional was composed of mostly full brackets. Of the two Western Regionals P-Burg had the most wrestlers, and therefore more matches to wrestle. Also, it was undoubtedly better balanced competitvely than the Lakin regional meaning there were fewer pins at P-Burg in the early rounds of the tournament .
Thirdly, the KSHSAA does not give tournament managers much latitude in adjusting starting times. The recommended start time on Friday is 2:00 p.m.--a manager can start later, but not earlier without special permission from the KSHSAA. My school requested such permission in '95 and was denied--we wrestled that year until 11:00 p.m.
I was in attendance at P-Burg tournaments when they used three mats, with the third being in the Aux gym which is right next to the main gym. The coaches and parents b****ed their butts off about having to go back and forth --so what do you do? Probably no one out West should be allowed to host a regional unless they can use three mats in ONE location.
However, the P-Burg tournament was NOT poorly run-- kudos should go their way for their hospitaltity and organization.

I live in Russell and our team got home at 1:30 imagine what time Ellsworth got home. They should have had more mats. I think its crap that we were still wrestling at 11:45.

surely Ellsworth spent the night in P-Burg--if not that is their bad.
I do not disagree that 11:45 p.m. is too late to wrestle, but the options were limited. The people who should be getting "dinged" about this are the KSHSAA people--they are they ones who set up the requirements for hosting events--they should require (and visually verify) space for 3 mats and at least 1500 spectators and wresters in one location.

I know Norton and Beloit both have adequate seating and room for three mats in one gym. Or schools with two gyms could hold half the weights in one gym and half in the other, or the top half of the bracket in one, and half in the other. The only complaint I had about the tournament was when Coach Fuller had to towel tap once, that made me giggle like a little school girl.
