I am looking for opinions on 6&u kids wrestling at 8&u at subs in an effort to qualify for districts. Is this a common practice? Is is a good idea? What are the advantages or disadvantages? You can post a reply or feel free to email me at: sekmidwife@yahoo.com

In my opinion it depends on their weight. If they are at a smaller weight you may find that the bracket has several 6 and unders that have moved up. I would be cautious if your son is at higher weight because you could be looking at kids in 8 and under that could actually be 9 wrestling your 6 year old.

Leave it up to your kid to make the final decision though - they have a lot of years ahead of them!

If your child is smaller or higher wieght, they still have a great chance at wrestling a 9 year old.
Have your 6 year old try the 8&u bracket as a B and wrestle the A bracket at your next tournament and find out in a hurry if the he or she is ready.
Many 6 year olds have went up to 8&u for subs and some have placed and even won state before.
As long as they are safe there is really nothing to lose. If the 6 year old wins, they beat the big kids, :p yea!! If they don't succeed then so what the they got beat by the big kids, nice try.

Lots of good points. My son would probably be at 46# or 49#. This is his second year. Still considering our options. He is always ready to wrestle. He wrestled at 8 & u in two tournaments last year at the advice of his coach. Just wanting to get feedback from others in the sport.

I think this is completely unnecessary since there are 6 & under championships beginning this year.

On 3/23 The 6&U Championships will be held at:

Ottawa High School
1120 Ash
Ottawa KS 66067

Isn't this the same type of tournament that was held in Ottawa last year? We went to some sort of championship tournament end of season at Ottawa.
