My brother from a past life, Bracketman, let it slip that he has joined the ranks of the over 50 club. I thought I might share a few thoughts on "how you know if your too old."

When you don't need Preparation H ... but you have located it at the grocery store.

If you know that Pamida ... actually stands for Paul, Michael, and David.

When a romantic evening involves a Shannon Tweed movie.

When you look at your own kid and can't remember their name.

When loosening up for physical activity requires a 6-pack of ibuprophen or a 6-pack of barley soda or BOTH!

When the clothes you've been wearing for the past twenty years have come back in style.

When your too old to die young.

You rememember Geritol being the sponsor of the Lawrence Welk Show.

You wore a powder blue, polyester, leisure suit with white shoes.

You still own a CPO jacket.

You use to wear a wide white tie.

You had heel taps on your boots.

and yes Swayz ... every Sunday night it was the millions of tiny bubbles and the Andrew hotties eh, I mean Andrew Sisters.

I have a white tie.

You know your getting old when this fine piece of artwork adorned a wall in your high school bedroom.



I personally got mine dumpster diving after the spring semester 1969 at one of the Frat houses at KSU...

Thought I slipped that through "incognito", but alas, Brother Randy caught me...

...when a trip to the barber shop is to tell jokes and share stories.

...when you are warning your kids about things which were cool when you were their age.

...when a "cool car" becomes "dependable transportation".

...when the music of your time can only be heard on the "Oldies" stations.

...when you think about how much you are going to hurt before doing something, then do it anyways.

AND

...when your kids start having kids!!

You must old enough to remember Jane Fonda as Barbarella, an "in the back of the movie theatre, make-out flick" prior to her trips to Hanoi, workout videos and Ted Turner.

.....When you surf the channels and stop to watch The Carol Burnett Show, The Porter Waggoner Show or The Lawrence Welk Show.

If you remember using words like..
Nifty, rad, tubular, cat's meow, neato-toledo, peachy keen, and cool beans.

The only way you could download dirty pictures was with scissors and a magazine.

If you remember headlight dimmer switches on the floorboard, Blackjack chewing gun, party lines, butch wax, S&H Green Stamps, blue flashbulbs and Soda Pop machines that dispense glass bottles.

Now what was I talking about anyways....

I was still a little bit young for “making out” during Barbarella. My buddies and I were the little hellions in the back throwing jujubes at the kids looking to find their first love.

I think this could be a cool way to take a stroll down memory lane. Unite Old Guys and relive a blast from the past! Black lights with the velvet posters, Incense and Lava lamps. What was your favorite piece of memorabilia?

I can remember Milk Duds being a good theatre projectile (and difficult to dig out of your US Keds, when stepped on). Late '60's muscle cars, with the 8-track player on the console (long before removing in-dash AM (only) radios). Your trunk was for hauling your 8-track library. Listening to 45's on the record player, then graduating to LP's and, if you had money, reel-to-reel. The magic of the Etch-a-Sketch, Bonanza on Sunday night, the NBC peacock in color (for the first time), LIFE magazine (the only color in the world, as TV was black-and-white, New Year's Day parades and football without a remote control, transistor radios (your only link to sports), a board game called Stratego (long before RISK and Battleship), the bubblegum stuck to your baseball cards, playing cards in the spokes of your bicycle...whew, I need a nap.

One of my favorite posters of years past involved another hobby of mine. It had Jan Stevenson being covered by a mound of golfballs!

And I remember when $10 would set you up for the entire weekend. Gasoline was 0.17 a gallon, the Drive In theatre was 0.75, and a 6-pack of PBR was only 0.79!

Of course I don't recall seeing many movies because of the testosterone was flowing in the back aisle of the drive in. It’s hard to watch a movie with the windows fogged up!

Pet rocks, getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons, staying out till 10:00 at night playing games with the neighbor kids.

On a more exact note - the year the Goodland TV antenna iced over and broke and we went an entire year (GASP!) without television at all!

i remember that, when the tv tower iced and fell, on the farm we only had one channel on our black and white, and that was channel 10 goodland.

....how about these, when VCR's were $1000, a digital watch $250, a 25" color console tv $900 (now that was a heavy piece of furniture!) video cameras the size of a small suit case, paid $700 for my first car a '71 monte carlo (wish i still had that car!) when you could still buy a new full size car for under 4K, when you remember desotos, ramblers, kiasers, and packards. 352's, 401's, 402's, 409's, 454's, 460's, and 500's were common engine sizes. people didnt make fun of your "panther pink" hemi cuda. when you remember goldie hawn on laugh in!

...your grandparents were born in the 19th century!
