Carroll holds off South for fifth straight CL titleBY SCOTT SEELWichita Eagle correspondent
The City League wrestling tournament has become old hat for Bishop Carroll's David Loos.
In the past three years, Loos has won three individual City League titles, his Eagles have won three team titles and his coaches have been named the league's Coach of the Year three times.
Saturday's league tournament at Heights was no different.
Loos went undefeated, pinning South's Tatum Flores in 1:54 for the title in the 152-pound division. Carroll won its fifth consecutive team title, finishing 30 points ahead of South, and coach Jamie Finkeldei was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
Loos, a senior, has never lost a City League tournament match.
"There's something about this gym with all the people in here, it's almost like they're right on top of you," Loos said. "It's almost better than state."
Carroll's day was far from easy, however, as South stayed close throughout the tournament.
"We knew it was going to be tough," Finkeldei said. "Especially this year with how tight all of the duals were. It's probably been the toughest one to win."
In fact, South won more individual titles (four) than Carroll (three).
Carroll had eight wrestlers in championship matches. South had seven. Carroll had five wrestlers in the third-place matches. South had four.
"I'm very pleased," South coach Mike Church said. "This is a very good day for South High and a very good day for South wrestling."
Loos was not the only wrestler who won his fourth straight league title.
West's Tristen Deshazer -- a three-time state champion -- pinned Carroll freshman Kyle Detmer in 3:58 for title at 130.
"There's a reason Tristen is a three-time state champion. If we beat him, it's a major upset," Finkeldei said. "I think people built it up to be a lot more than it might have been."
Carroll also won titles in 103 (John Keller) and 140 (Mitch Arnold). South's titles came in 135 (Bishop Price), 145 (Alex Patrick), 171 (Mike Webb) and 189 (Zerrell Williams).
