Five Frogs win MSAA titles
SCOTT CITY � For the second year in a row, Eric Kocher and Caleb Campbell won Mid-State Athletic Association League wrestling titles Saturday.
Parker Huitt, Darnell Bortz and Jacob Dill joined Kocher and Campbell on the victory stand.
In the team competition, the Greenbacks defeated Larned, Thomas More Prep, and Ulysses, setting up a championship dual with 3-0 Scott City.
Scott City stopped Pratt 46-24. It was the second straight year the Beavers had taken the Greenbacks and the title.
Scott City walked away with seven individual 2007 titles.
After looking through the film on Sunday, I saw that we were not overpowered by Scott City, but rather we made several mistakes that hurt us. Sometimes in close matches and sometimes in matches that weren�t so close. Therefore, I�m grateful to have a chance for my kids to correct those in preparation for regionals,� stated PHS head coach Bruce Kocher. �Matches against opponents like Scott City are the ones we have to win next weekend (Feb. 16-17), and I feel confident we will.�
The 125-pound champion in 2006, Kocher returned and won the 130-pound crown. The junior decisioned three opponents.
Campbell, currently ranked fourth in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, successfully defended his 2006 285-pound title, pinning all four opponents he faced.
Huitt, who accumulated three pins, captured the 125-pound championship.
Bortz wrestled three of his four matches at 171. He took the title with a 3-0 record.Dill matched Campbell�s four pin tournament. The perfect mark earned him the 215-pound crown.
Austin Baird (112), Maverick Petz (135), Byron Landis (140), Jon Prater (152), and Cody Inslee (160) finished second.
Prater, the 2006 145-pound champ, was tied at 2-2 with Scott City�s Lakin Dreiling entering the third period of the 152-pound title match. Dreiling picked up two-points on a late reversal to eke out a 4-3 win. Prater was working on a takedown as time expired.
Dean Senter (119) and Asher Riner (189) placed third.
Riner was 2-1 at 189 and 1-0 at 171.Pratt results:
