Why not weigh-in at the table? Give a pound for the shoes, head and singlet. If the wrestlers make weight then wrestle. If either fails that wrestler loses.
Hydration testing has to be very costly and it does not eliminate DEHYDRATION and CHEATING.
Scales are not that expensive for the tournaments each team could bring one or two.
Satellite weigh-ins at your own school days before or the morning of is BS.
Just think of all the hydrated kids we would have and the excitement. The crowd would be part of the weigh-in process.
I would enjoy watching a wrestler suck down 10 or 12 pounds and NOT rehydrate and wrestle a quality match.

I'm pretty sure in Michigan they have matside weigh-ins AFTER the match, at least at state. I don't know if they do this all year, or if they still do it.

Hydration testing is not costly. You pee in a cup and either an administrator or medical professional compares the color to a color chart. Can't get much more low-tech than that.

I think a wrestlers time is better spent focusing on his next match rather what his weight is.My kid couldn't keep track of his headgear or shoes half the time in highschool.

esj: Hopefully your kid made it through HS.
Ok, the Hydration testing is a cheap low tech band aid and will not promote Kansas wrestling. It's not hard to find ways around the low tech hydration test.
Weigh-in at matside would stop Uncontrolled Cheating. Why not have the kids wrestle what they weigh and not what the coach writes down?
Someone should try a Mat side Weigh-in tournament. It would be interesting to see where some of the kids belong. Would your team sign up?

It's not hard to find ways around the low tech hydration test. Do you have proof or any specific instances where a team has been guilty of not following the guidelines? Weigh-in at matside would stop Uncontrolled Cheating. Why not have the kids wrestle what they weigh and not what the coach writes down? Again, where is the proof? Call me ignorant, naive or perhaps just plain stupid but I believe the vast majority of coaches to have integrity beyond reproach and this comment is an insult to the many, many honest coaches and administrators. Someone should try a Mat side Weigh-in tournament. Assume some initiative and display your outstanding leadership capabilities and contact your high school administrators and coach to set up the tournament. Keep us informed of the progress?

Color based hydration tests are very inaccurate in my opinion. I have been sucked down fairly good and passed the specific gravity test easily. I have also seen heavyweights fail the test multiple times after drinking water all day long. It just depends on body type and genetics in my experience.

I don't think all coaches are cheaters. I do beleive that coaches pressure wrestlers to cut weight to fill a open weight on their teams. This may not be direct, spoken words to the kid but it is understood that if they want to wrestle they need to be a certain weight. So whether the coaches are looking the other way during hydration testing & weigh-ins, or if they are encouraging wrestlers to cut weight excessively, in the end , the coaches are responsible for the behaviors that occur in their programs. I believe matside weigh-ins would eliminate any doubt about a wrestlers true weight. Then we could see their true ability, being well hydrated and nourished, against an opponent at their true weight. Why would you need proof that there would not be any cheating with matside weigh-ins? The wrestlers could stand side-by-side and read each others scales! Good grief! Just wrestle your true, healthly, fit weight. You will be better conditoned, stronger, faster, and have more endurance. And then we, as spectators, will be able to sit back and enjoy some great, great matches, and not have to feel sorry for the wrestler with their bones showing and dark cirles under their eyes wondering what they would look like if they were healthy.

How about making a body fat test for overweight kids.We have alot more health issues in this country due to obessity than a few kids cutting weight.Still at a meet I'm more interested in who the best wrestler is than what the fat kid might look like if he were healthy.I would bet there are many more, and more serious health problems from overweight kids competing in sports than underweight. If a kid is cutting too much he will be weak, tired, and loosing matches. If he is bigger and stronger, the kids he is beating need to work harder.Weight changes throughout the day depending what a kid eats,drinks,2 day tournys have 2 day weighins (enuff is enuff).A competition to see who can keep their weight the same all day seems boring compared to a WRESTLING competition.(imo)Or maybe just make 2 weight classes big guys, and small guys no weighins.(probably half the big guys would want to be small guys)Point is as long as there are weight classes someone will try to find an edge.I have been to many meets and heard comments about under nourished kids but have heard many more about bras, manboobs and oh my gosh that guy needs more than a singlet.Weight needs to be left up to the wrestler, coach, and most of all the parent.

If we had mat side weighins what would you do about the guys who screwed up there knee during the summer and have a huge kneepad.. people would be looking for the lightest shoes and headgear.. anything to get that tenth of a pound.. i think it would bring to much hassle to wrestling..say you were a tenth of a pound over before a huge finals match at a big tournament. Would it be very exciting as a fan then?

Weight classes only represent what the wrestlers weighed that morning, not during the match. Matside weigh-ins would make the weight classes means more. Everyone would know that the two wrestlers actually weigh the same. I am all for it. It would make wrestlers diet down rather than cut their weight.

Next we could weigh in between periods to make sure one wrestler didn't sweat off more weight during one period thus giving the other an unfair advantage. Also reweigh every time someone spit, puked or after a nosebleed, making sure they weighed the same.

Thats the way it's done at the college ranks, some binge on liquids, and food after some don't.a couple ounces or pounds are not going to matter the best usualy rise to the top.Spend your time working on making yourself better don't worry about the other guys weight.

I love weighing in, in the morning then checking my weight before the dual, to see that I gained 7 pounds.

I've seen a kid weigh in the morning before a tournament 3 pounds under and successfully be 20 pounds over the same evening. Net weigh gain = 23 lbs

Personally, I'd rather get to eat and drink during a tournament without worrying about my weight every match.
