McRay, Hinman leave their marks

ALTAMONT - The Labette County High School Grizzlies wrestling team won a share of the Southeast Kansas League crown Thursday night after defeating Pittsburg, 53-19, and Parsons, 53-18, Thursday night at Harrison Gymnasium.

With 6-1 records, Labette County, Fort Scott and Chanute share the league crown. It's Labette County's second title in school history, having won it outright in 1977 at 6-0.

"I thought that we wrestled fairly well," LCHS head coach Brian Olivera said. "It was the last home match that our seniors would ever wrestle in high school, and it was really neat to see most of them come away with a win.

"As a team we have had a pretty good season. We seem to be on the right track, but the two most important weeks are still ahead of us. I am extremely proud of what the kids have accomplished so far. They have worked hard and deserve the success they are having."

Josh Hinman, a senior who bumped up to 135 pounds from 130 for the duel, was one of many who wrestled the last high school duel match of his career. He pinned both of his opponents.

"Josh is going to go on and wrestle somewhere in college, so he will have many more dual-meet experience only at the college level," Olivera said. "Josh did a good job working on some new technique that he has been trying to perfect before the state tournament."

Senior Nick McCroy bumped a couple notches to 125 pounds for Labette County Thursday night.

"Nick won both of his matches, which was great," Olivera said. "Nick is really at least a 119-pounder. if not a 112-pounder. So for him to be stepping in for us at 125 pounds and getting those wins is great.

"Nick has done a good job for us and I am happy he will get to compete in the regional tournament his senior year."

Labette County's Ethan Bogner (152) lost the only match he wrestled last night, to Jordan Brown of Pittsburg. Parsons' 152-pound class was empty.

"I felt he wrestled fairly well," Olivera said. "Brown is a tough kid, but we were able to walk away with a good look at him. Ethan will work on making some adjustments and hopefully we can get the match to swing the next time we face him."

At 215, LC's Johnathan Reazin lost by fall to Jordan McRay of Parsons. McRay also pinned his Pittsburg opponent.

"McRay is a tough kid and it was a match that he really needed to wrestle," Olivera said of Reazin. "Johnathan has done an excellent job this season.

"He has really stepped up for us this year and has put himself in a great position to have success at the regional tournament. If Reazin wrestles well at the regional, he could possibly make the state tournament."

At 160 pounds, Joey Hambleton was his steady self for the Grizzlies.

"Joey has wrestled well all season and he has been a very good leader for us this year," Olivera said. "In his final match of the night, Joey earned his 100th career victory. That's an awesome milestone for a wrestler and to be able to do it at home in front of our fans makes it even more special."

At 275, the Grizzlies' Cody Nading pinned Trevor Bush of Parsons.

"Cody has struggled a little this season as he has not wrestled very consistent," Olivera said. "However, it appears he may be hitting his stride and if there is a time for that to happen, it's now ... right before regionals and state."

Cuevas out for season

Parsons 130-pounder Maresa Cuevas was lost for the remainder of the season after suffering an undisclosed injury during the first period of her match against Pittsburg.

Actually a 119-pounder, Cuevas bumped up a couple weight classes to fill holes and round out the team attack, according to Parsons head coach Jody Thompson.

"Maresa is a real warrior," Thompson said. "After the injury, she was more worried about if giving up the six points (injury default) to Pittsburg had cost us a win than about her own pain.

"Give me 12 more like her and we would have an undefeated season."

There were two close matches at 125 and 140, according to Thompson, being Parsons' Steven Leon and Kyle Stringer.

"Both of these two learned a real lesson and it wasn't during the match," Thompson said. "They both donated blood (Wednesday) at the PHS blood drive.

"While donating blood is a noble gesture, I gave myself, it is not wise to do during the season, especially if you are wrestling a match the next day."
