I have always been curious as to why Kstate never fields a wrestling or softball team considering Big XII is powerful in both sports. Because the women refuse to use the Vet School for their medical needs unlike the horses!

Did you forget to add Melvin Douglas, & Jeremiah Beltran to your list. How about Kevin Klemm at Stanford as an assistant coach. I do believe this state needs a D-1 Program come on lets get this thing rolling like a freight train.

I am sure there are many men and women left off this list that help support wrestling acrossed the state. Keep sending letters to the atheltic directors, board of regents , other state officials. I do know money talks and we need a big hitter who plays golf with some of the state folks.

Some one needs to set up a petition sight at all of the state wrestling sights and get petitions signed of people in favor of a D-1 program.

Where were you guys last year? We, mainly Nowak and a friend in Manhattan, passed around a petition that had hundreds of names on it!
But this points out why we need to keep a continuing effort in front of the Kansas people!
We were relying on Ted Witulski to banner our crusade for us but I think we need to do so ourselves!

I would think of what our 4 CC's: Pratt CC, Colby CC, Neosho CC and Labette CC have done and the continued progress of a young, newer program in Newman U and the standard of wrestling FHSU has established would be evidence enough of any D-I program getting the quality and quantity for wrestlers to make them competitive in the Mo Valley or even in the Big XII!
How many wrestlers need to be recruited out of state or can't afford to go out of state, to other D-I programs before KU/KSU/WSU wakes up?

Yes the foundation has been established. Our petition could continue and more letters and e-mails to the administration and college leaders.

Shane, We need to approach Ottawa U about adding wrestling! They are trying to find students right now! Uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh...well...er...ummmmmm...NO! OU gave me and "education" that required me to go to FHSU and get "further education" ;-0 OU won't do what's needed to do to increase enrollment on campus, but they'll be more than willing to give it a go in KC, Pheonix and the Hong Kong campus(es)!!!

Little Old Bucknell in PA reinstated wrestling. Student Enrollment of about 3,500 I think they played KU a few years back in Basketball and competed against the Big Boys.
Bucknell makes most of multimillion dollar pledge USA Today feature on Bucknell wrestling (Feb. 5, 2007) Feb. 5, 2007 By Kristi Funderburk, USA TODAY On a recent day off from running his Philadelphia-based insurance company, William Graham watched the all-freshman Bucknell wrestling team shut out Princeton 46-0. The feat might have been impossible without the multimillion-dollar donation Graham made that reinstated the sport to varsity status after four years as a club sport. "Three students came to tell me that they would not have been able to go to college, let alone Bucknell, without the wrestling program," Graham said, recalling that match. "That is a wonderful feeling. I had no idea." Wrestling was dropped as a varsity sport after the 2001-02 season to help the program comply with Title IX, said Jon Terry, assistant director of athletics and director of athletic communications. Losing it meant the end of a 58-year Bucknell tradition originated by World War II servicemen stationed in Lewisburg, Pa. Graham, a 1962 Bucknell graduate who credits wrestling for many of his successes, made his first donation of $5.6 million in 2002, which started a year of recruiting for new coach Dan Wirnsberger. The Bison began a new Division I season Nov. 11 when the 18-member squad beat Maryland 27-14. With only three matches left before the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships, the Bison boast a winning season at 10-8. "We've come out, and we've opened up some eyes," said Wirnsberger, who coached wrestling for three seasons at Bloomsburg (Pa.). "They have that nothing-to-lose mentality, which says a lot about where we're at as a team. We'll most likely have the most wins in a single season, which is 11. Our chances are very good." Andy Rendos agrees. "It's been pretty amazing to come up and have a winning record," said Rendos, ranked 18th at 165 pounds by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, National Wrestling Media Association and InterMAT. "We're stronger and stronger every day." While the team continues to show improvement, Graham is continuing to follow through with his donations. Of his original contribution of $5.6 million, about half went to restart wrestling as an intercollegiate sport and the rest to women's sports. It's an example of how some schools deal with decisions that have eliminated some men's sports. His gift helped fund women's crew and pay for an artificial turf field for the women's field hockey team. Graham said he made a commitment in 2006 to give an additional $2 million. "I feel as good about what I've done about women's crew and women's field hockey as I do about wrestling," Graham said.

If Lew Perkins would get off his high horse and use some of the ESPN revenue to give other instate male & female students educational opportunities as they do to out of state kids we would have a wrestling program and other womens programs. Who knows maybe he would feel good about what he is doing as an athletic director. Most of those guys (athletic directors) have pension plans, base salaries, car allowances that could finance most "minor/nonrevenue" sports. I do not want to hear they do not have the money because there is sufficient data that says KU is in the Black. K-State has been in the Black on finances. Wichita has not and has continued to have financial difficulties as an institution.
Here is one of Lew Perkins, KU athletic director's comments from the KC Star article on the ESPN Agreement:
I think it was $27 million dollars or more!
"You can safely say this is one of the largest agreements in the country...I'm telling you, this is huge. We're not talking peanuts here. We're playing in the big time now."
I say KU will be playing in the big time along with Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Missouri once they wisely use some of this windfall to add college wrestling for both men and women. It obviously could be done now.

I have an idea that may or may not work, but since Newman is in transition to become a DII, why not just spend a few extra years and become DI in wrestling and one female sport or something? Heck look at Pennsylvania for a great example: Edinboro is DI in wrestling but DII in football and other sports. Maybe we get FHSU to go DI in wrestling and become part of that new conference with Air Force, SDSU, NDSU, N. Illinois and so on!

Newman & FHSU would be great as long as they are funded like a D-I program. I still like the idea of K-State or KU in the Big-12. As fast a Texas wrestling is growing I see them becoming a possible player (5 to 10 years out) in college wrestling as well as at the high school national duals & fargo.

If they add wrestling to a program that means they will have to add another womens sport or get rid of one of the mens programs. They now have to be equal mens and womens.

Excuses and dreamers this is what I see. Smylll you should come up to Gardner for the town meeting smokeycabin is trying to get set up, we will be holding freestyle practices again this summer. As far as I'm concerned this ship has sailed so I will try to stay up wind of all the retoric being thrown around. If you think we are not in-tune to what our state has done with advancement in youth wrestling you are wrong. We have lived it for many more years than I care to admit and many more years than I have known this community. I will admit that the Kansas wrestlers do deserve a D-1 wrestling college in the state in which they were born and raised. I do not believe the State of Kansas deserves one from what has been allocated to this effort thus far. I would say that usawks has become a state with the (novice syndome). When you look at the amount of money spent by the people of our state and the amount of money put back into the advancement of our wrestlers then you might think again why we are a novice state. If you look deep enough into the leadership and those that are in responsible position. You might begin to realize what this organization has become. Not only our organization but the Kansas coaches association has a resonsiblity to promote our wrestlers abroad. This is the breakdown that should be changed and redirected. There are many to many paychecks and not enough accountability or even an overall goal. So maybe I will pass you on the road as we drive to another state to watch wrestling.

D-1 in Kansas sounds great. But shouldn't we be more concerned on getting more Kansas HS to get on board with wrestling programs. Once this happens its easier to push at a college level. We currently have 6,673 in USAW this will increase by at least another 150 to 200 when HS season is done. These are numbers to work with. I know the Governor was at kids state a couple years back she saw the crowd level that Kansas wrestling produces, not to speak of HS State attendance. I wonder how these numbers match up to kids Basketball, Football, and Baseball numbers in the State. But not just in attendance but $$$ brought in to the community during these events. I have been involved in all the sports I listed with my kids, and none come close to compair with wrestling on attendance, and money generated.

As fast a Texas wrestling is growing I see them becoming a possible player (5 to 10 years out) in college wrestling as well as at the high school national duals & fargo. That would be my thought too about Newman or FHSU going up to D-1. I would question whether in the long run that they could have the type of budget to be competitive in that division. It might be better for them to rise to the top in D-II against schools with comparable budgets. The other thing is that we ideally want programs added at WSU, KSU and KU because it creates more opportunities for our wrestlers. We just need more teams period in Kansas and other states. Smokey is right that Texas should be adding a team. Texas needs to follow Ohio State's lead in the amount of athletic programs that it offers. If any school in the Big 12 has the money to add a team, it is Texas. Another Big 12 neighboring state school that needs to add a wrestling team is Colorado. I hope the NCAA someday makes it a mandatory Division I requirement to field a wrestling team. They have a mandatory minimum number of teams requirement for Division I. I think they could also make having a wrestling team a Division I requirement.

How about Pitt State adding wrestling as a DI? Heck they have one of the most successful (regardless of Division) football NCAA programs in the last 15 years, I think that might be able to fund some initial scholarships or something on the side.
